Karan Johar recently reaffirmed his unwavering love and commitment to Bollywood, calling it "the most beautiful place" and the source of his identity, career, and purpose. In a recent interview, the filmmaker expressed his deep connection to the Indian film industry, stating that it has given him everything – his name, his identity, and even his very breath.

Johar, known for directing and producing iconic films under his Dharma Productions banner, emphasized that he has no intention of ever leaving Bollywood. "I want to die while I'm still making movies," he told podcaster Raj Shamani. He envisions himself on a set until his last breath, highlighting his passion and dedication to the craft of filmmaking.

The director of "Rocky Aur Rani Kii Kahaani" also addressed critics of the industry, pointing out the irony that even those who condemn Bollywood are often deeply connected to it and benefit from its support. He noted that people who criticize the industry often rely on it, perhaps without even realizing their dependence. Johar's statement subtly took a dig at these critics, suggesting that their negativity is somewhat hypocritical given their reliance on the very industry they criticize.

Johar's declaration comes at a time when there are ongoing discussions about the merits of South Indian cinema versus Hindi cinema. Johar has actively participated in these discussions, asserting that it is incorrect to consider one superior to the other. Instead, he champions the idea of "Indian cinema" as a collective entity, promoting unity and collaboration within the industry, rather than division. He believes that all filmmakers, regardless of their regional base, contribute to the richness and diversity of Indian cinema.

In the same interview, Johar also opened up about his personal struggles with body image and health. He addressed rumors about his recent weight loss, clarifying that it was not due to weight-loss injections like Ozempic or Mounjaro. Instead, he revealed that he had been battling weight issues for years and had tried numerous diets and workout routines. It was only after getting comprehensive blood tests that he discovered underlying thyroid issues and other problems, which he has since been addressing. Johar expressed his frustration with the constant inquiries about weight-loss drugs, emphasizing that his improved health and confidence are a result of a healthier lifestyle and addressing his medical issues. He stated that he has "never felt lighter, never felt better," and is finally confident in his own skin. Despite the compliments, Johar admitted to struggling with body dysmorphia and feeling ashamed of his body in the past.

Furthermore, Johar shared that his initial career aspirations were not in filmmaking but in fashion design. He credits Aditya Chopra for recognizing his potential as a filmmaker and encouraging him to pursue that path. Shah Rukh Khan further solidified his journey by promising to star in his directorial debut, which led to the success of "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" and shaped Johar's career. Johar acknowledged that he is in Bollywood today because of the support and belief of Aditya Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan.

Dharma Productions has an interesting lineup of films for 2025, promising to keep Johar busy doing what he loves. He is also venturing into Punjabi cinema with "Akaal," a collaboration between Dharma Productions and Gippy Grewal's Humble Motion Pictures. This film is significant as it will be the first Punjabi film to have a Hindi theatrical release worldwide.
