Mani Ratnam's "Thug Life," starring Kamal Haasan, has been released today, June 5, 2025, marking the reunion of the actor and director after 36 years since their cult classic "Nayakan." However, initial reviews from audiences are mixed, with some praising the performances and visuals, while others criticize the writing and pacing.

The film, a gangster action drama, features Kamal Haasan as Rangaraaya Sakthivel Naicker, a formidable gang leader who rescues and raises a young boy named Amaran, played by Silambarasan, amidst a ruthless underworld. The ensemble cast includes Trisha Krishnan, Abhirami, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ali Fazal, Rohit Saraf, and Joju George, with special appearances by Sanya Malhotra and Pankaj Tripathi. Music is composed by A.R. Rahman, with cinematography by Ravi K. Chandran and editing by A. Sreekar Prasad.

Some viewers have lauded Kamal Haasan's performance, noting his charisma and screen presence. Silambarasan TR is also being praised for his portrayal of Amaran, with some calling him a show-stealer. The film's visuals and A.R. Rahman's background score have also garnered appreciation. A reviewer from Hindustan Times wrote that the first half had a "brilliant interval block and really good narrative and story build up so far".

However, many critics point out that "Thug Life" suffers from a predictable storyline and a slow pace. Some have expressed disappointment in the writing, noting that the film relies on gangster movie clichés and lacks depth. Several viewers have stated that the second half goes downhill, with uninspired writing and weak characterization. One X user wrote, "#ThugLife had potential but ends up dragging. Kamal Haasan delivers a solid performance, but his never-ending monologues wear you down. Simbu handles his part well, but even that can't rescue the sluggish, flat second half. The trademark Mani Ratnam spark? Nowhere to be found."

Certain aspects of the film have come under scrutiny. Trisha Krishnan's role has been described as unnecessary and underwritten, with her character not adding much to the story. Others felt that the film has underutilized talents like Ashok Selvan, Joju George, and Aishwarya Lekshmi.

Adding to the film's woes, "Thug Life" has been banned in Karnataka due to Kamal Haasan's controversial statement regarding the origin of the Kannada language. Despite this, trade experts predict a decent opening at the box office, with an estimated ₹30-40 crore gross on its first day.

Overall, "Thug Life" appears to be a mixed bag. While Kamal Haasan's performance and the film's technical aspects have been appreciated, the predictable story, slow pacing, and weak writing have left many viewers disappointed. Whether the film can overcome these criticisms and find success at the box office remains to be seen.
