World Music Day, celebrated annually on June 21st, is a global event that promotes music as a universal language of expression. Initiated in France in 1982, it has now spread to over 120 countries, including India, where it is marked with concerts, music festivals, and performances that highlight the diverse musical landscape. The theme for World Music Day 2025 is "Healing Through Harmony," underscoring music's role in emotional well-being and social unity. This year, we spotlight actors who have successfully transitioned into singing, showcasing their multifaceted talents.

Diljit Dosanjh: A Punjabi Icon

Diljit Dosanjh, born on January 6, 1984, in Dosanjh Kalan, Jalandhar, began his musical journey in 2002. His early albums, "Smile" (2005) and "Chocolate" (2008), gained recognition in Punjabi music. Dosanjh's breakthrough came with "The Next Level" (2009), featuring Yo Yo Honey Singh. In 2011, he debuted as a leading actor in the Punjabi film "The Lion of Punjab," eventually entering Bollywood in 2016 with "Udta Punjab," for which he received the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut.

Dosanjh's music blends traditional Punjabi elements with contemporary sounds, appealing to a wide audience. His hit songs like "Proper Patola" and "Laembadgini" have topped charts globally. In 2023, he made history as the first Indian artist to perform at Coachella. Dosanjh’s ability to balance acting and singing has made him a global star, promoting Punjabi culture worldwide.

Priyanka Chopra: From Bollywood to Global Stage

Priyanka Chopra, a Bollywood star turned global icon, also ventured into music. While her music career was short-lived, she released singles like "In My City" (2012) featuring will.i.am and "Exotic" (2013) with Pitbull. Chopra acknowledged the demanding nature of a musician's life, saying, "That's why my music career lasted two seconds... This rockstar life is... I admire it tremendously. It's definitely not for the weak-hearted." Despite her brief stint, Chopra's crossover demonstrated her vocal abilities and ambition. She has expressed that she has 40 unreleased songs.

Alia Bhatt: Melodies from the Heart

Alia Bhatt has showcased her singing talent in several films, including "Sooha Saaha" in "Highway" (2014). Composer A.R. Rahman trained her at his music school. She also sang the acoustic version of "Samjhawan" in "Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania" (2014) and "Ikk Kudi" in "Udta Punjab" (2016) with Diljit Dosanjh. In 2024, they reunited for "Chal Kudiye" from "Jigra."

Bhatt believes she can compose music, creating impromptu songs for her daughter, Raha. She jokingly mentioned recording these tunes, highlighting how motherhood inspires creativity. Though she may not pursue singing as a primary career, her contributions add a personal touch to her films.

Sunny Kaushal: The Rapper on the Rise

Sunny Kaushal, known for his role in "Shiddat," recently debuted as a rapper with his Punjabi track "Mid Air Freeverse" (2025). The song, released with Mass Appeal, features Kaushal as both performer and lyricist, drawing from his Punjabi roots. He wrote the song on a flight from Delhi to Mumbai.

Kaushal's musical inspirations range from Eminem to Bohemia, blending global and Punjabi rap influences. He sees music as an emotional outlet and intends to continue acting as his first love. "Mid Air Freeverse" has gained traction for its fresh sound and energetic vibe, marking Kaushal as a promising new face in the indie rap scene.

These actor-singers exemplify the multifaceted talent within the Indian entertainment industry. As World Music Day 2025 emphasizes music's unifying power, their contributions highlight the harmony between acting and singing, enriching the cultural landscape.
