In the late 1990s, when the underworld held considerable sway over Bollywood, Aamir Khan found himself in a precarious situation. Like many prominent stars of the era, he received an invitation to attend a party in the Middle East, likely Dubai, hosted by individuals associated with the underworld. This was a time when accepting such invitations was almost customary for film personalities.

Aamir Khan, however, made a different choice. He declined the invitation, a decision that, according to producer Mahaveer Jain, put his life at risk. In an interview with The Lallantop, Aamir recounted the persistent efforts to persuade him. Representatives from the underworld visited him multiple times, offering money and promising to fulfill any favors he desired. Despite these enticements, Aamir remained steadfast in his refusal.

The situation escalated when the tone of the requests shifted. Aamir was informed that his presence at the party had already been announced and that his absence would be a matter of prestige for the hosts. However, Aamir stood his ground. He stated that he had been consistent in his refusal from the beginning and that while they had the power to force him to attend, he would not come willingly. He reportedly said, "You can bash me up, hit me on the head, tie my hands and legs, and take me forcibly wherever you want, but I wouldn't come on my own". Following this firm stance, the underworld representatives ceased contact with him.

Aamir Khan admitted that he was afraid at the time, primarily for the safety of his family, which included his then-wife Reena Dutta and their two young children, Junaid and Ira. He was concerned for his closed ones. His parents were also very concerned. He married Reena Dutta in 1986 and they later divorced in 2002. This concern for his family was a major factor in his decision to avoid any association with the underworld.

Aamir's commitment to his principles was also evident in his professional life. During his time hosting the television show "Satyamev Jayate," he refused to endorse several brands because he felt that featuring ads in between the serious show would reduce the show's seriousness. He forfeited endorsements for almost three years, demonstrating his dedication to maintaining the integrity of the show.

Mahaveer Jain described Aamir Khan as a person who stays away from name, fame, money and power and keeps himself away from the rat race. Jain also noted that Aamir is often misunderstood and that those who know him personally would attest to his integrity and character. Aamir's actions reflect a deep-seated commitment to his values, even when faced with considerable pressure and potential danger.
