Safira is the stepdaughter of the late Sunjay Kapur, the prominent Indian businessman who passed away on June 12, 2025, at the age of 58. Her connection to Kapur has placed her at the center of an escalating inheritance battle over his estimated Rs 30,000 crore (approximately $3.6 billion USD) fortune.
Safira is the daughter of Priya Sachdev Kapur, Sunjay Kapur's third wife, from her previous marriage to businessman Vikram Chatwal. Sunjay Kapur's complex family dynamics, including two prior marriages and children from those unions, have contributed to the intricate nature of the succession dispute. He was previously married to fashion designer Nandita Mahtani and Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor, with whom he had two children, Samaira and Kiaan. After divorcing Karisma Kapoor in 2016, Sunjay Kapur married Priya Sachdev in 2017, and they have a son named Azarius.
The central question surrounding Safira is whether she is entitled to a portion of Sunjay Kapur's vast estate. Under Indian law, a stepchild typically does not have inheritance rights unless legally adopted. Reports suggest that Sunjay Kapur may have legally adopted Safira, which, if true, would grant her the same inheritance rights as his biological children. However, this is complicated because if Safira was legally adopted by Sunjay, she might forfeit her right to inherit from her biological father, Vikram Chatwal.
Adding to the complexity, both Priya Sachdev Kapur and Safira have reportedly made changes to their surnames. Priya now goes by Priya Sunjay Kapur, and Safira has apparently dropped "Chatwal" from her name, now using Safira Kapur. These changes are perceived by some as strategic moves to strengthen their claims to the Kapur inheritance. Currently, Safira's Instagram account does not display a surname, while Priya's account reads "Priya S Kapur," leaving observers to speculate whether the "S" stands for Sunjay or Sachdev.
Adding another layer to the inheritance dispute is Sunjay Kapur's mother, Rani Kapur, who has publicly challenged boardroom decisions made following her son's death. She alleges that she was pressured into signing documents without proper review during her mourning period and has voiced concerns about the appointment of Priya Sachdev Kapur as a non-executive director of Sona Comstar. Rani Kapur claims to be the sole representative of the Kapur family's interests in the company, citing a will from 2015 that designates her as the sole beneficiary of her late husband's estate.
Sunjay Kapur's children with Karisma Kapoor, Samaira and Kiaan, appear to have been provided for financially. They were reportedly gifted bonds worth Rs 14 crore (approximately $1.7 million USD) and guaranteed a monthly income of Rs 10 lakh (approximately $12,000 USD) each. Karisma Kapoor was also reportedly given ownership of a house previously owned by Sunjay's father. These provisions suggest that while Samaira and Kiaan may not inherit the business empire directly, their financial futures have been secured. Karisma Kapoor is reportedly not involved in the inheritance or property-related matters and is solely focused on the well-being of her children.
As the legal battle unfolds, the future of Sunjay Kapur's Rs 30,000 crore estate remains uncertain. The court may ultimately decide the inheritance, especially if there is no clear will.
