The trailer for "Marty Supreme," starring Timothée Chalamet, has been released, offering a glimpse into the glamorous, dramatic, and high-stakes world of competitive table tennis in the 1950s. Directed by Josh Safdie, the film stars Chalamet as Marty Mauser, a young man determined to achieve greatness in the world of ping-pong, despite facing widespread skepticism.

The trailer, set to Alphaville's "Forever Young," introduces Marty as a man with a grand vision, confident that ping-pong's popularity will soon explode in the United States. His ambition extends beyond the sport itself, as he dreams of stardom and a coveted spot on a Wheaties box. The official synopsis describes Marty as "a young man with a dream no one respects, who goes to hell and back in pursuit of greatness".

While not a direct biopic, "Marty Supreme" is loosely inspired by the life of American table tennis legend Marty Reisman. Chalamet reportedly underwent extensive training to capture the physicality and technique of a professional player. Cinematographer Darius Khondji noted that Chalamet "wanted to be like a real [professional] ping pong player when he started shooting". Safdie has also said that Chalamet will be very different in this role and "people aren't going to recognize him at all".

The film boasts a star-studded supporting cast, including Gwyneth Paltrow as a famous actress who becomes involved with Marty. The cast also includes Odessa A'zion, Tyler Okonma (aka Tyler, the Creator), Fran Drescher as Marty's mom, magician Penn Jillette, Kevin O'Leary from "Shark Tank," and filmmaker Abel Ferrara.

"Marty Supreme" marks Josh Safdie's first solo directorial effort since 2008's "The Pleasure of Being Robbed". He co-wrote the screenplay with Ronald Bronstein, a frequent collaborator. The film also reunites Safdie with cinematographer Darius Khondji, who previously worked with him on "Uncut Gems". Electronic musician Daniel Lopatin, another key collaborator, is providing the score.

A24 is distributing the film, which has a rumored budget of $70 million, making it one of the studio's most expensive productions to date. The film is produced by Safdie, Bronstein, Eli Bush, Anthony Katagas, and Chalamet.

The trailer hints at a complex narrative, showcasing intense gameplay and interpersonal drama. Paltrow has described the film as having "a lot of sex". "Marty Supreme" is scheduled to be released on Christmas Day, December 25, 2025.
