Emmy-winning actor Timothy Busfield, known for his roles in "The West Wing," "Thirtysomething," and "Field of Dreams," has been indicted by a New Mexico grand jury on four counts of criminal sexual contact of a child. The Bernalillo County District Attorney's office confirmed the indictment on Friday, stating that the case is expected to proceed to trial and will be prosecuted by the office's Special Victims Unit.

The charges stem from allegations of misconduct that occurred while Busfield was working as a director and actor on the Fox drama "The Cleaning Lady". The alleged incidents involve two child actor brothers. According to a criminal complaint filed by an investigator with the Albuquerque Police Department, one of the children reported that Busfield inappropriately touched him multiple times on the set of the series. The child stated that the first incident occurred when he was seven years old, and further incidents occurred when he was eight. He also said he was scared to report the abuse because he feared Busfield would get mad at him. The abuse is alleged to have occurred between November 2022 and Spring 2024. The boy's twin brother also told authorities he was touched by Busfield, but did not specify where. He said he feared getting in trouble for reporting the alleged abuse.

An arrest warrant was issued for Busfield in January, and he turned himself in to authorities and was subsequently released from jail on his own recognizance pending trial.

Busfield's attorney, Stanton "Larry" Stein, issued a statement expressing concern about the prosecution proceeding with the case, calling it "fundamentally unsound and cannot be proven at trial". He stated that the indictment was not unexpected and that Busfield would fight the charges. Stein also claimed that a detention hearing exposed "fatal weaknesses" in the state's evidence.

Warner Bros., the producer of "The Cleaning Lady," reportedly conducted its own investigation into the allegations but was unable to corroborate them. In an interview with police last fall, Busfield told authorities that the boys' mother was seeking revenge.

The child who reported the alleged abuse has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety, according to the criminal complaint.

Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman announced the indictment Friday in a social media post.
