Prior to his "American Idol" success, Jamal Roberts was a 27-year-old P.E. teacher from Meridian, Mississippi. His love for music began in childhood, singing hymns and covers in church. Roberts shared with Billboard that his grandparents were instrumental in nurturing his talent, noting his early performances included covers of The Temptations and Michael Jackson. He grew up deeply involved in the church, with both grandfathers holding significant positions, ensuring Roberts was present for every service, whether ushering, singing in the choir, or playing drums.
Roberts' audition for "American Idol" featured a soulful rendition of "Mary Jane" by Rick James, immediately capturing the judges' attention. Lionel Richie praised Roberts' ability to tell a story through his voice, while Luke Bryan lauded his "southern soulfulness."
