Bollywood star Aamir Khan has shared a humorous anecdote about how Pakistani cricket legend Javed Miandad inadvertently "ruined" his wedding day back in 1986. The actor recounted the story during a recent interview, explaining how Miandad's iconic last-ball six against India in Sharjah overshadowed his secret marriage to Reena Dutta.
On April 10, 1986, a 21-year-old Aamir Khan secretly married Reena Dutta because their families didn't approve of their relationship. As the young couple went through their wedding formalities, the India-Pakistan match in the Austral-Asia Cup was underway. According to Aamir, the families of both him and Reena were so engrossed in the match that they did not notice their absence.
Aamir recalled that upon returning home after the wedding, he and Reena found everyone glued to the television, watching the thrilling cricket match. India was in a strong position, and Aamir felt happy, thinking India would win the match which would be a perfect wedding gift. However, with Pakistan needing four runs off the final ball, Javed Miandad struck a six off Chetan Sharma's delivery, securing a dramatic victory for Pakistan.
The shot instantly became a legendary moment for Pakistani fans but was a crushing blow for Indian supporters. For Aamir, the joy of his wedding day quickly turned to disappointment. He later joked that he was devastated and thought it was a terrible omen for India to lose to Pakistan on his wedding day.
Years later, Aamir Khan had the opportunity to meet Javed Miandad during a flight. He playfully accused Miandad of ruining his wedding. Aamir told him, "Javed Bhai, you didn't do right by me. You ruined my wedding. That six you hit—I was so upset!".
Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta finalized their divorce in 2002 after 16 years of marriage.
The story illustrates the power of sports and the emotions it evokes, particularly in the Indian subcontinent. Miandad's six remains an unforgettable moment in cricket history, celebrated in Pakistan and lamented in India. For Aamir Khan, it became a personal anecdote, a day when his private celebration collided with a major sporting event, creating a memory that would last a lifetime.
