Mangal Dhillon, a prominent figure in Indian television and film during the 1980s and 1990s, is remembered for his commanding baritone voice and performances alongside legendary actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha, Sunny Deol, and Anil Kapoor. Despite his remarkable body of work, the late actor seems to have been forgotten by many in the industry.

Born on June 18, 1957, in Punjab, Dhillon was a bright student with an early passion for the arts. He honed his love for performance in school plays and later pursued it at the Indian Theatre Department at Panjab University, where he earned a Gold Medal for his exceptional performance in 1980. During this time, he was reportedly engaged to actress Mita Vashisht.

Dhillon moved to Delhi and became active in the city's theatre circuit, also taking on voice work in commercials. His powerful voice quickly gained attention, leading to his recruitment by Doordarshan as a newsreader. His acting break on television came with the serial Katha Sagar.

Mangal Dhillon was known for iconic serials like Buniyaad, Junoon, and Noorjahan. At the peak of his career, he was among the highest-paid actors on Indian television. Despite his fame and success, he felt a sense of spiritual restlessness.

Some other actors who quit fame at their peak include:

  • Jaya Bachchan: After starring in hit movies like Guddi and Abhimaan, she stepped away from films after marrying Amitabh Bachchan in 1973 to focus on her family and motherhood. She made a comeback in 1998 with Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa.
  • Sridevi: Bollywood's first female superstar took a 15-year break after marrying Boney Kapoor in 1996. She made a comeback with English Vinglish in 2012 but remained selective about her work until her death in 2018.
  • Zaira Wasim: The Dangal fame announced her decision to quit acting at the age of 18, citing religious reasons.
  • Vinod Khanna: He left the industry at the peak of his stardom to join a spiritual community.
  • Asin Thottumkal: The Ghajini star retired from films after marrying Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma.

Later in life, Dhillon directed documentaries focused on Sikhism and launched a YouTube channel in 2009, sharing motivational talks and life guidance. He passed away in 2023 after being diagnosed with cancer.
