Harry-Meghan Latest Update: Director of Communication Exits Role
Emily Robinson, who recently served as the Director of Communications for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, has departed from her position after a brief four-month tenure. Robinson's exit marks the latest in a series of staffing changes for the couple since they relocated to California in 2020.
Before joining Harry and Meghan's team in late May, Robinson was a Senior Director of Publicity at Netflix. Her experience included handling publicity for some of the platform's top titles, which made her seemingly well-suited for working with the Duke and Duchess, who maintain close ties with Netflix through their Archewell Productions banner.
While the Sussexes have not publicly commented on the reason for Robinson's departure, a source indicated that the move was voluntary. A spokesperson for the couple praised Robinson's contributions, stating that she "did an excellent job" overseeing project-based work for "a very successful season of With Love, Meghan" and provided additional support for the production company.
Robinson's departure comes shortly after Meghan faced criticism during Paris Fashion Week for sharing a video of herself riding through the city. Critics suggested the footage was insensitive as it appeared to have been filmed near the Pont de l'Alma tunnel, where Prince Harry's mother, Princess Diana, tragically died in 1997. Sources close to the couple told the Daily Mail that Harry was upset by the criticism, emphasizing that Meghan "did not even pass close to the tunnel" and that negative media narratives continue to target the family.
This latest staff change has inevitably led to speculation about the work environment within the Sussexes' organization. Some observers have questioned whether the Duchess of Sussex is "difficult to work for," an image that critics claim has followed her since her exit from the Royal Family. Robinson is reportedly the tenth publicist to leave the Sussexes' employment within a five-year period.
Adding fuel to the fire, claims of Meghan's alleged bullying behavior towards royal staff during her time as a working royal have resurfaced. Jason Knauf, a former palace aide who accused Meghan of bullying, gave a rare televised interview where he stated he had "no regrets" about making the allegations public. Knauf had previously written to his boss, Simon Case, alleging "very serious problems" with Meghan's behavior, claiming she bullied two palace aides out of the household. Meghan's team has consistently refuted these claims, dismissing them as a smear campaign.
Adding another layer of complexity, a royal author has suggested that the palace's decision to keep the results of an inquiry into the bullying claims confidential was actually taken to shield Prince Andrew from scrutiny. Andrew Lownie's biography, Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, alleges that Andrew mistreated numerous Royal staff over the years and that the report on Markle was withheld because it "would also raise questions about the behaviour of the Queen's second son".
Despite the allegations, some individuals have publicly defended Meghan, praising her exceptional care and consideration as an employer. The Sussexes' communications structure currently includes Liam Maguire as European Communications Director and Meredith Maines as Chief Communications Officer. It remains to be seen how these recent changes will impact the couple's public image and their ongoing projects.
