Swara Bhasker, known for her roles in films like "Nil Battey Sannata" and "Veere Di Wedding," recently discussed the challenges she faces as an outspoken actress in Bollywood. In a recent interview, Bhasker reflected on her career, motherhood, and the public perception of her. She openly shared her thoughts on the price she believes she has paid for expressing her opinions freely.
Bhasker acknowledged that her outspoken nature has led some people to deem her too controversial for their projects. She stated, "People are often uncomfortable with women who are too confident or opinionated. I've paid a price for being outspoken. Some people find me too controversial to cast in their projects, but I have no regrets. Every stand I've taken comes from my principles". Despite this, she remains steadfast in her commitment to speaking her mind and fighting for what she believes in. "You fight for what you believe in — that's who I am,” she asserted.
The actress also touched upon the difficulties faced by outsiders in the film industry, particularly those without strong connections. "Actors can only choose from what they're offered. For outsiders without big connections, sometimes the offers aren't great. But I've always chosen work I can stand by," she explained.
Bhasker addressed her interfaith marriage with politician Fahad Ahmad, recognizing the unique challenges it presents. "It's been harder for Fahad because I already have an overwhelming reputation. It's not easy for politicians to have wives who are noisy and attract attention," she noted. However, she expressed gratitude for the open-mindedness of her husband and in-laws, stating, "My experience has been opposite of the stereotypes. Fahad's family has been kind, generous, and understanding. I feel blessed".
Bhasker also commented on being labeled an "armchair activist," clarifying that she sees herself more as a well-intentioned ally to various causes. While she acknowledges that she may not always be on the front lines, she actively lends her voice to issues she believes in.
Bhasker has faced intense scrutiny and trolling for her views. She has often given it back to trolls in style. Addressing this, Bhasker has said that she doesn't understand why there is so much attention on her Twitter page, and that she is literally only saying what she feels about what is happening around her in her country. She believes that the act of just speaking your opinion in a somewhat, perhaps not very safely balanced manner, and the act of taking sides is important.
Despite the challenges, Bhasker remains committed to using her platform to speak out on issues that matter to her. She says that she would speak out even if she wasn't an actor, because causes are important by themselves, not because a celebrity talks about it.
