Predator in Badlands: A Bollywood-esque Avatar Retelling Stretches the Sci-Fi Legend Thin in New Movie.

Dan Trachtenberg's "Predator: Badlands" has landed in theaters, and it's already generating buzz for its fresh take on the iconic sci-fi franchise. Shifting away from the traditional predator-as-villain narrative, "Badlands" boldly casts a Predator, named Dek (played by Dimitrius Schuster-Kolomatangi), as the protagonist. This time around, the story infuses the familiar sci-fi action with buddy comedy elements, creating a lighter tone.

The film throws Dek onto the dangerous planet Genna, where he crash-lands and encounters Thia, an endlessly chipper android portrayed by Elle Fanning. Thia has lost her legs in a previous encounter with the Kalisk, a fearsome creature sought after by both Dek and the Weyland-Yutani Corporation. She offers her assistance to Dek in navigating the treacherous terrain in exchange for help in reuniting with her twin "sister," Tessa, and potentially getting her legs back. Their dynamic, while initially forced, evolves into a surprisingly natural and entertaining partnership as the film progresses. Dek, in true Predator fashion, initially refers to Thia as a "tool" rather than a companion.

"Predator: Badlands" distinguishes itself by prioritizing world-building. Genna is vividly realized, featuring imaginative and deadly flora and fauna. The planet itself, brought to life through a mix of CGI and the natural landscapes of New Zealand, becomes a character in its own right. While the character arcs of Dek, Thia, and Tessa are somewhat predictable, the richly detailed environment and action sequences provide ample entertainment. The action sequences are well-staged.

The film opens on the Predator homeworld, Yautja Prime, introducing Dek, his brother, and father, while expanding on the Predator culture. Dek's mission is to hunt and kill the Kalisk to prove his worth to his clan. "Badlands" also subtly connects to the Alien universe through the presence of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation, which seeks to weaponize extraterrestrial life.

Critics are noting Elle Fanning's performance as a highlight, with some saying she steals the show as the android Thia. Despite being legless for much of the film, her character's charm and comedic timing contribute significantly to the movie's lighter tone. Schuster-Koloamatangi's portrayal of Dek also earns praise, conveying a compelling performance despite heavy prosthetics and CGI enhancement.

Dan Trachtenberg seems to be someone who doesn't like to repeat himself. While "Predator: Badlands" embraces a lighter tone and buddy-comedy dynamic, it still respects the essence of the Predator franchise. It balances humor with action and creature violence.

Overall, "Predator: Badlands" is a refreshing and entertaining addition to the Predator franchise. Its willingness to break from formula, coupled with strong performances and a well-realized world, makes it a worthwhile cinematic experience.
