Aditya Madhavan Defends Gouri Kishan: Silence on Weight-Shaming Controversy Was Not Endorsement, He Claims.

The Tamil film industry is embroiled in a controversy after actress Gouri Kishan was subjected to a body-shaming question during a press conference for her new film, Others. The incident occurred when a journalist questioned Gouri's co-star, Aditya Madhavan, about her weight, asking if it was difficult to lift her during a scene in the movie. Gouri immediately confronted the journalist, questioning the relevance and inappropriateness of the remark.

The video of the confrontation quickly went viral, sparking widespread criticism of the journalist's behavior and drawing support for Gouri from fans and colleagues alike. Many lauded her courage and composure in standing up against body shaming and sexism.

Aditya Madhavan, who remained silent during the initial exchange, has since issued a public apology and clarification. Addressing the criticism he received for his silence, Madhavan stated, "My silence didn't mean I approve body shaming of anyone. I froze because it caught me off guard, as it is my debut… She didn't deserve that. No one does. Everyone deserves respect". He further apologized for not intervening sooner.

Gouri, known for her roles in films like '96, Karnan, and Ulagammai, expressed her disappointment that the focus had shifted from her work to her physical appearance. "I haven't been asked a single question about my character or my preparation—only about my body," she stated. She also questioned whether a male actor would face the same kind of scrutiny. Gouri asserted, "You are objectifying a female actor. This is not journalism. What you are doing is a disgrace to your profession".

The incident has ignited a broader conversation about sexism and misogyny within the film industry. Numerous celebrities and film industry members have voiced their support for Gouri and condemned the journalist's behavior. Singer Chinmayi Sripada praised Gouri's courage, noting the pushback that often occurs when disrespectful questions are called out. Actor-politician Khushbu Sundar criticized the journalist's conduct, emphasizing that a woman's weight is irrelevant and praising Gouri for standing her ground.

The Chennai Press Club has also condemned the journalist's actions and expressed solidarity with Gouri. The South Indian Artists Association echoed this sentiment, denouncing the mockery and humiliation of actresses under the guise of journalism.

Gouri's firm stance has resonated with many, prompting discussions about the need for greater respect and sensitivity in media interactions with female actors. She emphasized that comments targeting a person's body or appearance are inappropriate and that she wished she had been asked about her work in the film. "I cannot help but wonder if they would ask a male actor the same, in the same aggressive tone," she added.

Others, directed by Abin Hariharan and featuring Gouri as Dr. Madhumitha and Aditya Madhavan as a cop, was released on November 7. Gouri's next project, Love Insurance Kompany, is scheduled for release on December 18.
