Shekhar Kapur, the acclaimed director of iconic films such as "Masoom," "Mr. India," and "The Bandit Queen," recently shared a heartwarming anecdote about an interaction at Mumbai airport that has further fueled the anticipation for a sequel to his 1983 directorial debut, "Masoom".
On October 27, 2025, Kapur recounted his experience on X, detailing a conversation with an international security officer at the airport. The officer recognized Kapur and began humming a tune from "Masoom," which led to a discussion about the state of Hindi cinema today. According to Kapur, the officer lamented the lack of heartfelt films, saying, "They do not make films from the heart anymore. The stories do not mean anything anymore. The songs are meaningless".
Adding to the সুররিal nature of the encounter, another passenger joined the conversation and began humming a different tune from "Masoom," calling it their favorite. The security officer then inquired about the status of "Masoom 2," a sequel that has been the subject of media speculation. When Kapur responded that it was coming "soon", the officer urged him to prioritize the project, stating, "Sir, Jaldi Banaiye, please!". Kapur concluded his post by saying, "I'd better get on with it".
The original "Masoom" starred Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi in leading roles and was Shekhar Kapur's directorial debut. The film is a poignant story about a family dealing with the arrival of an illegitimate child, and it is remembered for its emotional depth and memorable soundtrack.
This isn't the first time Kapur has spoken about the impact "Masoom" has had on audiences. In February 2024, he shared a story about a co-passenger on a flight who watches "Masoom" monthly and finds something new to appreciate each time. The co-passenger had also inquired about the sequel and its title, expressing concerns about whether a sequel could capture the innocence and emotional power of the original.
The positive reception and constant encouragement from fans and even airport security personnel seem to be pushing Kapur closer to bringing "Masoom 2" to fruition. The director has not yet revealed specific details about the plot or cast, but the anticipation surrounding the project suggests that it would be a highly anticipated release.
