Sonu Nigam recently lashed out at the media for falsely attributing controversial statements to him on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). The renowned playback singer took to Instagram to clarify that he does not have an account on X and expressed his frustration over the spread of misinformation using his name.

The incident occurred amidst a heated debate surrounding language policies in Karnataka. A fake X account, impersonating Sonu Nigam, engaged in a sarcastic exchange with Tejasvi Surya, a Member of Parliament from Bengaluru, regarding the use of Kannada in banking services. Surya had criticized a State Bank of India branch manager for not communicating with customers in Kannada, emphasizing the importance of local language proficiency. The imposter account retorted with comments about dubbing Kannada movies in Hindi and releasing them pan-India, which several media outlets erroneously attributed to Sonu Nigam himself.

This misreporting sparked immediate backlash, prompting the singer to address the issue head-on. Nigam posted screenshots of the fake account on his Instagram, reiterating that he is not on X and condemning the media for not verifying the information before publishing it. He expressed concern that such misinformation could negatively impact his reputation and relationships with his fans, stating that it would "poison the minds of people who have loved me so much all these years." He further added, "Not everyone will have the sense to fact-check your news. I'm truly done with this country's desperate and brutal Media. Shame.”

This isn't the first time Sonu Nigam has had to clarify his absence from X. In February 2025, he shared a similar warning about the same impersonator account, highlighting the potential danger of controversial posts being misconstrued as his own and endangering his family. He lamented the lack of action from the press, administration, government, and law enforcement despite their awareness of the issue.

The owner of the X account in question, "Sonu Nigam Singh," has previously stated that it is their birth name and that they are a criminal lawyer from Bihar, denying any intention to impersonate the singer. However, the account continues to be a source of confusion, particularly when commenting on sensitive topics.

Sonu Nigam's strong reaction reflects his deep concern about the misuse of his identity and the potential consequences of unchecked misinformation in the digital age. The incident underscores the importance of media outlets verifying information before publication and the need for greater awareness among social media users to avoid falling prey to fake accounts and fabricated news.
