The recent controversy surrounding Kamal Haasan's remarks about the Kannada language at a promotional event for his film "Thug Life" in Chennai continues to stir debate, particularly regarding the reactions and responses of prominent Kannada figures. Haasan's statement that "Kannada is born out of Tamil" sparked immediate backlash in Karnataka, with language activists and cinephiles condemning the comment as inaccurate and offensive. Kannada superstar Shiva Rajkumar, who was present at the event, has found himself at the center of this controversy, with many questioning his initial reaction to Haasan's statement.

Initially, Shiva Rajkumar defended Kamal Haasan, expressing his admiration for the veteran Tamil actor. He stated that Haasan has always spoken highly of Kannada and Bengaluru, emphasizing his long-standing respect for the actor, "Kamal Sir has always spoken highly of Kannada and has expressed great admiration for Bengaluru. He speaks with pride about our city. We've grown up watching him, and I've been a die-hard fan of Kamal Sir for years.” However, this defense drew criticism from pro-Kannada groups, who felt that Shiva Rajkumar was downplaying the significance of Haasan's controversial statement.

In response to the backlash, Shiva Rajkumar has now clarified his position, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to Kannada. He stated unequivocally that Kannada is his first priority, declaring, “Kannada is my first option, without a doubt. All languages are important, but Kannada comes first for me. I can give my life for Kannada. When there's an issue involving Karnataka, I'm always the first to stand up.”

Adding another layer to the narrative, recent reports suggest that Shiva Rajkumar has denied clapping during Kamal Haasan's controversial statement. While details surrounding this specific denial are still emerging, it underscores the sensitivity of the issue and the pressure Shiva Rajkumar faces to align himself with the pro-Kannada sentiment.

Furthermore, Shiva Rajkumar has urged a more profound and consistent commitment to the Kannada language and culture, beyond mere symbolic gestures. He questioned the media and the public, "What have you done for Kannada cinema? Have you given opportunities to newcomers? If we truly want Kannada to grow, it's our duty to support it in every way possible.” He stressed that genuine support for Kannada should translate into long-term actions that benefit the language, culture, and local cinema.

The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) has also taken a firm stance, announcing that "Thug Life" will not be allowed to release in Karnataka until Kamal Haasan issues a formal apology. KFCC member Sa Ra Govindu stated, “We support the Kannada organisations demanding an apology from Kamal Haasan. Until he issues one, the film will not be released in the state.”

For his part, Kamal Haasan has refused to apologize for his statement, maintaining that it was made out of love and based on his understanding of linguistic history. He stated, “This is a democratic country. I will not apologise if I believe I've done nothing wrong. I believe in law and justice.” He further clarified that the debate should be left to historians and language experts.

As the controversy continues, it highlights the deep-seated linguistic pride and sensitivities that exist in the region. Shiva Rajkumar's evolving response reflects the complex position he occupies as a respected figure in Kannada cinema, navigating his personal admiration for Kamal Haasan with his responsibility to uphold the sentiments of the Kannada-speaking population. The controversy also raises broader questions about the role of artists and public figures in addressing sensitive cultural and linguistic issues.
