Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam has publicly commended Indian music icon A.R. Rahman for his significant contributions to Singapore's music scene through collaborations with local artists. President Tharman acknowledged Rahman's role in providing valuable exposure to Singaporean musicians, thereby enriching the nation's multiculturalism.

In a social media post on June 2, 2025, President Tharman shared photos from his meeting with the Grammy, Oscar, and Golden Globe-winning composer, widely known as ARR. Rahman was in Singapore on May 10 and 11 for the premiere of his directorial debut, "Le Musk," a multi-sensory virtual reality film, currently showing at Golden Village Suntec City until August 12.

President Tharman emphasized the importance of Indian music and cultural talent within Singapore's diverse artistic landscape. He specifically highlighted Rahman's efforts in showcasing local talent over the years, mentioning collaborations with artists such as the rapper-songwriter duo Lady Kash and Krissy, singer-musician Shabir, and rapper Yung Raja. One notable collaboration is "Wanna Mash Up?," a song featuring Lady Kash and Krissy, which was part of the 2014 Hindi film "Highway."

Beyond his recent projects, President Tharman also noted Rahman's longstanding connection with Singapore, recalling that it was the first international destination the Chennai-born musician visited in the 1980s. During that initial trip, Rahman purchased his music equipment from local stores like Swee Lee and City Music, both of which continue to thrive today.

A.R. Rahman's influence extends far beyond Bollywood, encompassing work in Hollywood, the West End, and Broadway. His unique style blends Indian classical music with contemporary Western elements. His film "Le Musk" exemplifies his innovative spirit, integrating VR technology to create an immersive cinematic experience through visuals, sound, haptics, and even scents. The 37-minute film uses advanced camera technology, offering viewers a unique sensory experience with VR headsets and specialized egg-shaped chairs that release fragrances at Golden Village Suntec City.

Rahman has a history of performing in Singapore, including a recent concert at the National Stadium on August 31, 2024. He has also graced the stage at Gardens by the Bay (2014), the Singapore Indoor Stadium (2005), and Marina Bay Sands. President Tharman's praise underscores the cultural exchange and mutual appreciation between India and Singapore, highlighting A.R. Rahman's role in fostering these connections through music.
