Shawn Hatosy, known for playing complex and often dark characters, has recently reflected on his role as Boyd Fowler in Dexter. Hatosy portrayed Fowler, a roadkill contractor with a disturbing secret, in Season 5 of the show.

Hatosy expressed his enthusiasm for the role, stating he was "dying" to take it. After playing several cop roles, he was excited to stretch his acting muscles and step outside that world. He found the character to be "delicious" and enjoyed getting into the mindset of someone so disturbed. Despite the darkness of the character, Hatosy managed to find something to appreciate in Boyd Fowler, believing he had a genuine love for animals, both dead and alive.

Boyd Fowler was a complex character. While working for Miami-Dade Dead Animal Pickup, he had a disturbing side, killing women who were either raped or abused and then dumping their bodies in barrels. Dexter meets Boyd during a roadkill cleanup and notices how observant Fowler was. Hatosy noted that there was something almost innocent and pathetic about Boyd. He needed companionship, and Dexter's shared interest in dead things endeared him to Boyd. Hatosy played him as a human as possible, as Boyd doesn't know he's a bad guy and he thinks what he is doing is right.

Hatosy was impressed by the show's writers, who crafted a complex yet human character. He found the scripts to be well-thought-out, raising the stakes and creating a world that, despite its madness, rang true and honest. He also appreciated the underlying humor that emerged even within the darkness.

Although Hatosy's appearance in Dexter was brief, his portrayal of Boyd Fowler left a lasting impact, solidifying his reputation for taking on challenging and memorable roles. Looking back, Hatosy is proud of his work on Dexter and would welcome the opportunity to reprise the role in Dexter: Resurrection. He told Deadline, “I really enjoyed getting into those shoes. Talk about disturbed. It's hard to find something to love about Boyd Fowler, but I think I did".
