Actor Eric Dane, best known for his roles in "Grey's Anatomy" and "Euphoria," is sharing the difficult realities of living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). In a recent interview with Diane Sawyer on "Good Morning America," the 52-year-old revealed that he has lost control of his right arm and is concerned about the progression of the disease.

Dane first noticed symptoms over a year ago, initially attributing the weakness in his right hand to excessive texting or fatigue. However, the problem worsened, leading him to consult with specialists. After seeing multiple hand specialists and neurologists, he received the devastating diagnosis of ALS nine months later. He publicly announced his diagnosis in April 2025.

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness, loss of motor control, and eventually, paralysis. There is currently no cure for ALS, and the disease's progression varies from person to person.

Dane described the emotional impact of the diagnosis, stating that he will "never forget those three letters" and that the reality of ALS is present the moment he wakes up each day. He shared that his right side has "completely stopped working," and he fears losing function in his left arm within a few months. Despite these challenges, Dane is determined to remain positive and focused on his family and work.

The actor's personal life has also seen a recent shift. He and his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, had begun divorce proceedings in 2018, but they dismissed the filings in March 2025. Dane expressed immense gratitude for Gayheart's support, calling her his "biggest champion" and "most stalwart supporter." He noted that they now talk every day and have become better friends and parents through this difficult journey.

Dane, a former competitive swimmer and water polo athlete, recounted a harrowing experience that highlighted the impact of ALS on his physical abilities. While boating with his daughter, they both jumped into the ocean, but Dane quickly realized he lacked the strength to swim back to the boat. His daughter had to pull him to safety, leaving him heartbroken by the realization that he was no longer safe in the water.

Despite the challenges, Dane is committed to living his life to the fullest. He is set to return for the long-awaited third season of "Euphoria" and expressed his desire to continue working as long as he can. He emphasizes the importance of spending time with his family and remains hopeful about the future. "I don't think this is the end of my story," he affirmed, conveying his determination to fight the disease and make the most of each day.
