"Jumma Chumma De De," a song from the 1991 film "Hum," remains one of Amitabh Bachchan's most iconic and beloved tracks. However, behind the scenes, there was initial hesitation from the megastar himself regarding the now-famous hook step.
Choreographer Chinni Prakash recently shared anecdotes from the film's shoot, revealing that Amitabh Bachchan was initially worried that the hook step might appear vulgar on screen. According to Chinni Prakash, the film's director, Mukul Anand, also had reservations about the step. In a recent interaction, Chinni Prakash recalled that he was summoned late at night because his assistants were too scared to demonstrate the hook step to Amitabh Bachchan.
Chinni Prakash then personally performed the entire song with his dancers for Amitabh Bachchan. Amitabh responded to the director that he would require three months of rehearsal and requested that the shoot be postponed. Amitabh Bachchan told Chinni Prakash, "You are a 5 feet man and it looks good on you, but I am 6 feet plus, and it won't look good on me". Chinni Prakash had to plead with him to do the hook step.
Despite his reservations, Amitabh Bachchan eventually agreed to try the step. The choreographer revealed that after the song was shot and edited, it was screened in a theatre with Jaya Bachchan and a young Abhishek Bachchan present. The screening was tense, with "pin-drop silence" during the six-minute song. However, as soon as the song ended, there was a huge positive reaction in the theatre. Jaya Bachchan was very happy after seeing the step and said that it was the best step and people would not forget it.
Chinni Prakash credits Jaya Bachchan's foresight for the song's ultimate success. Her confidence in the hook step resonated with audiences, making "Jumma Chumma De De" a memorable hit. The song's popularity significantly boosted Chinni Prakash's career, leading to increased demand for his choreography and earning him the Filmfare Award for Best Choreographer. The song was sung by Sudesh Bhosle and Kavita Krishnamurthy. Sudesh Bhosle also received the Filmfare Award for Best Singer for the song.
