Varun Sharma: From Serious Theatre to Comedy Star - Rahu Ketu Actor's Surprising Journey

Varun Sharma, known for his comedic roles in Bollywood hits like the Fukrey franchise, has revealed a surprising detail about his early acting career. Contrary to his established image as a funnyman, Sharma began his journey in the world of acting with serious, dramatic roles in theatre.

In an exclusive interview, the actor, who is gearing up for the release of his upcoming comedy film Rahu Ketu, shared that he never envisioned himself as a comedic actor during his formative years. "During my theatre days, I was always cast in serious roles," Sharma disclosed. "I was so immersed in those characters that the thought of making people laugh never even crossed my mind. It's funny how things change."

Sharma, who was born on February 4, 1990, in Jalandhar, Punjab, India, pursued his education at The Lawrence School in Sanawar and later at Apeejay School in Jalandhar. He obtained a bachelor's degree in Media, Entertainment and Film Technology from ITFT Chandigarh. Sharma's early exposure to acting included modeling and theatre.

His breakthrough role as "Choocha" in the 2013 comedy-drama Fukrey catapulted him into the limelight and established him as a comedic force to be reckoned with. The film, directed by Mrighdeep Singh Lamba, was a commercial success, earning ₹49 crore worldwide. Since then, Sharma has starred in numerous comedy films, including Dolly Ki Doli, Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon, and Fukrey Returns.

His upcoming film, Rahu Ketu, reunites him with Pulkit Samrat, his co-star from the Fukrey series. The film, directed by Vipul Vig, is described as a comedy-adventure inspired by folklore, incorporating humor, fantasy, and elements of Indian culture. The film is produced by Zee Studios and BLive Productions and is set to release theatrically on January 16, 2026. The cast also includes Shalini Pandey, Piyush Mishra, and Chunky Panday.

The trailer for Rahu Ketu has already been released, showcasing the comedic chemistry between Sharma and Samrat. Piyush Mishra's voiceover sets the mythological context of Rahu and Ketu, while the film follows the chaotic journey of two ordinary men whose impulsive choices trigger extraordinary consequences.

Sharma's character in Rahu Ketu leans into situational and physical comedy, forming the comic backbone of the film. "Comedy is my happy space, and with Rahu Ketu, we are bringing a unique idea to the audience," Sharma said.

Looking back on his career, Sharma acknowledges the unexpected turn his career took. "I never knew that I could make people laugh," he admitted. "It was only when I started doing comedy that I realized I had a knack for it. It's been an incredible journey, and I'm grateful for all the opportunities I've had."

Rahu Ketu promises to be a fun-filled ride, blending mythology, comedy, and contemporary sensibilities. With Sharma's comedic talent and the film's quirky storyline, audiences can expect a light-hearted and entertaining experience.
