Nick Jonas Shares the Heartbreaking Story of Daughter Malti's Premature Birth and Initial Struggles

Nick Jonas has recently shared a deeply personal account of his daughter Malti Marie's premature birth in January 2022. Speaking on the "Jay Shetty" podcast, Jonas recounted the intense circumstances surrounding Malti's arrival, revealing details he had not previously discussed publicly.

Jonas and his wife, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, were expecting Malti in April of that year, but received a call indicating that her arrival would be sooner than anticipated. Born via surrogate, Malti entered the world weighing just 1 pound, 11 ounces, and with a purple hue, as Jonas described. He expressed immense gratitude for the "angels in the NICU" who resuscitated her and provided immediate care.

The early months of Malti's life were challenging, requiring an extended stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Jonas explained that he and Chopra maintained a constant presence, working 12-hour shifts at the hospital due to COVID-19 restrictions. He vividly remembers the environment, noting, "I could still sort of smell it, you know? There are always visceral things". He also found both comfort and fear in seeing other families experiencing similar situations.

Malti's journey involved significant medical intervention, including six blood transfusions. Jonas proudly stated that "she fought every day for three and a half months" and gradually began to gain weight. Finally, after 100 plus days in the NICU, Malti was able to go home with her parents in May 2022.

In an interview with British Vogue in January 2023, Chopra Jonas shared that Malti was delivered a full trimester before her due date and was "smaller than my hand". On Mother's Day 2022, Jonas posted a heartfelt tribute to his wife on Instagram, acknowledging the "rollercoaster" they had been on and expressing gratitude to the medical staff at Rady Children's La Jolla and Cedar Sinai, Los Angeles hospitals.

Both Jonas and Chopra have spoken about the impact of Malti's early struggles on their perspective. Chopra mentioned in an interview with Today that she "didn't have the luxury to be scared or to be weak because she was scared and weak".

Now four years old, Malti is thriving. In January 2026, the family celebrated her fourth birthday with a "Little Mermaid"-themed party. Jonas and Chopra shared glimpses of the festivities on social media, expressing their joy and amazement at how quickly their daughter has grown. Jonas has also expressed his belief that Malti possesses a spiritual sense of gratitude, despite likely not remembering the difficult start to her life. He simply stated, "She's incredible".
