Jessica Simpson is celebrating eight years of sobriety. The singer and actress, 45, marked the milestone on Saturday, November 1st, with a reflective message shared on Instagram.
In the post, accompanied by a smiling selfie, Simpson wrote, "8 years ago today I made the choice to confront, to confess and to let go of the self-sabotaging parts of my life that I was choosing". She continued, "Making that decision allowed me to fully live in the pursuit of God's purpose for my life. Alcohol silenced my intuition, blocked my dreams and chased my circulating fears of complacency". Simpson concluded her message with, "Today I am clear. Today I am driven by faith. Both fear and faith are something that we feel and may not see, I'm so happy I chose faith over fear. It was not in the fight that I found my strength, it was in the surrender".
Simpson has been open about her struggles with substance abuse and her journey to sobriety, explaining that she initially turned to alcohol to cope with past traumas. In a January 2020 interview on Today, she recalled a specific moment in October 2017 when she realized she needed to get sober. Referring to Halloween that year, Simpson said, "I honestly couldn't even tell you who got them ready. I was dazed and confused, and I just wanted to go to sleep". She admitted, "I didn't take them trick-or-treating. I didn't show up for my family. I took the picture and I made the world think that I had showed up".
In August 2024, Simpson responded to a follower who told her to "stop drinking" in the comments section of an Instagram post, clarifying that she has not had alcohol since October 2017 and that it was the best decision for herself and her family.
Simpson shares three children, Maxwell, Ace, and Birdie, with her estranged husband, Eric Johnson. The couple announced their split in January 2025 after 10 years of marriage.
Simpson has also spoken about how sobriety has positively impacted her songwriting. She revealed that in 2016 and 2017, she hesitated to release songs she wrote with top hitmakers because they "just didn't feel like me". She explained that alcohol made her afraid of her own creative instincts, but "Once I gave up the alcohol, the fears just diminished. They went away".
While focusing on her musical career, Simpson has released two EPs, her first since 2020, and has been touring throughout 2025. She has also opened up about what she is looking for in her next romantic partner, stating, "I think I'm into younger men at the moment".
