Suriya's latest film, "Retro," directed by Karthik Subbaraj, has seen a significant drop in box office earnings on its fifth day, despite a decent performance over its opening weekend. According to early estimates, the film has grossed over ₹46.50 crore in India within five days.

The movie, which was released on May 1, 2025, had a strong opening day, collecting ₹19.25 crore, primarily driven by the Tamil version, which contributed ₹17.25 crore. Over the weekend, "Retro" maintained steady numbers, earning ₹7.75 crore on Friday, ₹8 crore on Saturday, and ₹8.15 crore on Sunday. However, on Monday, its fifth day, the film's earnings plummeted to approximately ₹3.35 crore across all languages. This represents a substantial decline from the opening day but aligns with typical weekday trends. The film experienced a 58.53% drop in earnings on Monday.

Despite the drop, "Retro" has managed to cross the ₹46 crore mark in India. The film's total earnings in India reached ₹43 crore after the first four days and is expected to surpass ₹50 crore soon. As of Monday, the film made ₹41.99 crore from its Tamil shows and ₹4.36 crore from its Telugu shows.

The Tamil version of "Retro" had an overall occupancy of 22.54% on Monday, with night shows recording the highest turnout at 26.95%. The Telugu occupancy was lower at 13.36%, indicating moderate traction in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Pondicherry recorded the highest occupancy at 40%, followed by Dindigul, Trichy, Chennai, and Vellore.

Globally, "Retro" has grossed ₹73.5 crore in its first five days, with ₹50.9 crore from India and ₹22.6 crore from overseas markets.

"Retro" faces competition from Nani's "HIT: The Third Case," which has also impacted its box office run. "HIT: The Third Case" has crossed the ₹50 crore mark within its first five days.

The film stars Suriya and Pooja Hegde in the lead roles, along with an ensemble cast including Jayaram, Joju George, Nassar, and Prakash Raj. Shriya Saran also makes a special appearance. "Retro" blends action, nostalgia, and socio-political themes, a signature style of director Karthik Subbaraj. While Suriya's performance and the film's visuals have received praise, the screenplay and pacing have faced criticism.
