R. Madhavan is making a return to the romance genre with the upcoming Netflix film, Aap Jaisa Koi, but he's also stirring conversation about modern relationships and evolving societal norms. In a recent interview, Madhavan shared his insights on dating apps and the complexities of navigating romance in the modern age.

Aap Jaisa Koi, directed by Vivek Soni, stars Madhavan as Shrirenu Tripathi, a 42-year-old Sanskrit professor who is set in his traditional ways. Fatima Sana Shaikh plays Madhu Bose, a spirited French instructor. The film explores Shrirenu's journey as he re-examines his long-held beliefs about masculinity, companionship, and emotional expression after meeting Madhu. It promises to be a heartwarming family drama that celebrates connection and the discovery of "Barabari Wala Pyaar" (equal love) in unexpected circumstances. The movie is scheduled to be released on July 11, 2025 on Netflix.

Madhavan's character finds a mirror to his own conditioning in Madhu, a woman who refuses to conform to societal expectations. As they navigate family expectations, emotional baggage, and societal norms, Aap Jaisa Koi evolves into a story of self-discovery and female empowerment.

Madhavan describes Shrirenu as "quiet, awkward, and deeply human," and unlike any love story he has done before. He also added that the film speaks to people who have felt overlooked in life or love, and serves as a reminder that it is never too late to start living on your own terms.

In discussing modern relationships, Madhavan has also reflected on the changing definitions of respect and chivalry. He noted the confusion that many men of his generation face as traditional gestures are increasingly viewed as outdated or offensive. He also recognizes that what was once considered respectful can now come off as condescending.

Madhavan has also spoken on the importance of understanding the nuances of respect in relationships, recounting an incident where he mistakenly used the term "PYT" (pretty young thing) to compliment a woman, only to realize it could be interpreted as objectification. He also elaborated on how men often believe their smallest efforts at change are magnanimous, but that's not always enough.

Madhavan's film Decoupled, which is a comedy series about a couple on the verge of divorce, became the second most watched show on Netflix in India. He also said that he was looking for something light-hearted during the pandemic, which is why he accepted the role in Decoupled.

With Aap Jaisa Koi, Madhavan returns to the romance genre, but with a contemporary lens, prompting reflection on love, respect, and equality in today's world.
