Veteran actor Annu Kapoor has strongly condemned violence stemming from language conflicts, asserting that it constitutes a criminal offense. His remarks come in response to the recent Hindi-Marathi conflict in Maharashtra. Kapoor emphasized the importance of respecting local culture and language, particularly when residing in a different part of the country for livelihood purposes.

Speaking to the media at an event in Chandigarh, Kapoor stated that violence is wrong, unconstitutional, and should be condemned. He stressed that India is a country of diversity, where religion, language, and community cannot be unified. He suggested that unity can be found under the Indian flag, where different people may see different aspects, but it is essential to focus on the flag as a whole, as it represents the future.

Kapoor highlighted that while linguistic diversity is a reality, respecting the local language is a responsibility for those who settle in a region. Drawing an analogy, he noted that when traveling to cities like New York, Paris, London, or Milan, it is expected to speak the local language. He stated that not knowing the language does not justify physical assault and that resorting to violence in the name of language is illegal.

He went on to say that individuals who incite violence in the name of language, regardless of their identity, be it Raj Thackeray, Bal Thackeray, or anyone else, should be punished under the law for breaking the law, resorting to violence, acting against the constitution, and engaging in illegal activities.

Kapoor believes that the issue is often politically motivated, with those involved aiming to gain attention. He said that politicians seek publicity and want people to talk about them, a phenomenon not limited to India but seen worldwide. He reiterated that violence is wrong, a crime, and it is the duty of the law to punish the guilty. He added that justice delayed is justice denied and if justice is denied, the court must intervene.

Kapoor also reflected on a past experience where his film faced controversy, leading to threats against him from the Muslim community. He recalled that the Maharashtra government provided him with security, which he later declined when the matter was resolved.

In February 2025, Kapoor voiced his concerns about the misuse of freedom of expression, particularly in the digital age, in response to offensive remarks made during an episode of "India's Got Latent". He argued that the right to freedom of expression should be reserved for those who fulfill their duties towards the country and society. He expressed worry over the increasing tendency to misuse this freedom, leading to societal decay.

Kapoor stated that Indians have misused their rights more than anyone else, contributing to the country's downfall. He believes that those who do not consider their duty to society should lose their rights. He cautioned that unchecked freedom of expression could lead to anarchy, where individuals might resort to violence over perceived offenses. He advocated for societal punishment for those who use obscene language, emphasizing that such matters should not be open for debate.
