Director Adhik Ravichandran has officially confirmed that he will be directing Ajith Kumar's upcoming project, tentatively titled 'AK64'. This announcement follows the major success of their previous collaboration, 'Good Bad Ugly,' which was released earlier this year and grossed over ₹150 crore at the box office. The film was praised for its stylish execution and mass appeal, reigniting the classic fanboy genre in Tamil cinema.
In a recent media interaction, Adhik expressed his excitement about working with Ajith Kumar again. "Yes, I'm doing the next film with Ajith Kumar sir. I'm very happy that I've got the opportunity to direct AK64," he stated. He also added that the film will be different from 'Good Bad Ugly' and will be a treat for fans. While Adhik has confirmed his role as director, he has refrained from divulging specific details about the film's plot or other cast members. When asked about GV Prakash's involvement, Adhik stated that it would be more appropriate for the producers to make that announcement.
Ajith Kumar is currently occupied with his racing commitments, participating in events like the GT4 European Series and the Creventic Series. Despite his racing schedule, Ajith has been planning his next film project. In a conversation with The Indian Express, Ajith mentioned his intention to begin shooting later this year, stating, "If I can squeeze in a film between the November to February period, I will then have a film release every year, and I can also focus on my racing programme". He anticipates that the new project will be released around April or May 2026.
'AK64' is generating considerable buzz, with reports suggesting a large budget and potential cast additions. There are rumors that Srinidhi Shetty is being considered for the female lead. Furthermore, there are reports that Malayalam superstar Mohanlal is in talks to play a significant role in the film. If Mohanlal joins the cast, it would mark the first on-screen collaboration between him and Ajith Kumar.
Industry sources suggest that Ajith Kumar has been offered ₹180 crore for 'AK 64', making it one of the most expensive deals for a Tamil star. The film's overall budget is expected to be around ₹275 crore. Romeo Pictures, known for backing Ajith's previous hits, is likely to produce the film.
Ajith Kumar had previously expressed his interest in making a racing film in India, similar to "Fast and Furious" or an F1 movie, reflecting on the possibility of incorporating his passion for racing into his film projects.
With Adhik Ravichandran at the helm and Ajith Kumar in the lead, 'AK64' is already one of the most anticipated Tamil films in development.
