Amaal Mallik, son of music director Daboo Malik, has recently made serious allegations against his uncle, Anu Malik, claiming that Anu professionally sabotaged Daboo's career, leading to a prolonged period of depression for his father. In a revealing interview with Siddharth Kannan, Amaal detailed the strained professional relationship between the two brothers, both prominent figures in the Indian music industry.
Amaal stated that while Daboo and Anu share a close personal bond, professional jealousy and competition often marred their interactions. He recounted instances where Anu Malik would allegedly undermine Daboo's career by securing projects that Daboo was in line to receive, sometimes offering his services for free or at a significantly reduced cost. Amaal asserts that this undercutting cost his father numerous opportunities. For example, Amaal claimed that Daboo was about to be signed for the film Murder, but Anu Malik intervened and took over the project.
According to Amaal, Anu's actions were driven by a desire to prove himself as the best composer in the family. He wanted to establish himself as the dominant figure in their musical lineage. Amaal witnessed his father's struggles from a young age, which instilled a strong resolve in him to prove his own worth through music. He described Daboo Malik as too naive to fight back against industry politics and betrayals from family and friends in the music industry. These repeated setbacks led Daboo into a state of depression that lasted from age 32 to 45.
Amaal also touched upon the lack of recognition his father continues to face. Despite working on over 70 films, Daboo Malik is still frequently referred to as "Anu Malik's brother". This perception has been deeply frustrating for Amaal, who aims to change the narrative and have people recognize Anu as the uncle of Armaan and Amaal Malik.
Amaal also alleged that the composer duo Sajid-Wajid played a role in undermining his father's career. He stated that they would play games, contributing to Daboo's sense of betrayal within the industry.
Furthermore, Amaal claimed that Anu Malik has also interfered with his own projects. He stated that Anu sometimes jumps in when Amaal makes announcements. Despite this competition, Amaal acknowledged that Anu respects his work.
Amaal also addressed his strained relationship with Anu Malik and the MeToo allegations against him. He made it clear that he chose not to support or defend his uncle, stating that he never felt a familial connection with Anu and felt detached from his controversies. He admitted feeling ashamed when the allegations surfaced and questioned why multiple women would independently accuse the same person if there were no basis to the charges. Amaal emphasized his commitment to ethical conduct in the industry.
