Shah Rukh Khan's recent National Film Award win for his performance in "Jawan" has been met with a wave of celebration from fans, but also a sense of "finally!". For many, the recognition is long overdue for an actor who has dominated Bollywood for over three decades. While accolades like the Padma Shri and two prestigious French honors, Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and the Legion of Honour, have acknowledged his contributions to cinema, a National Award had remained elusive until now.

The announcement of the 71st National Film Awards on August 1, 2025, saw Shah Rukh Khan sharing the Best Actor award with Vikrant Massey for "12th Fail". While Massey's performance was highly praised, it was Khan's win for his portrayal of a vigilante taking on corrupt institutions in Atlee's "Jawan" that sparked the most conversation. The film itself was a commercial juggernaut, crossing ₹1000 crore at the box office.

Many fans expressed their happiness, noting that Khan should have received this recognition much earlier in his career. Some pointed to his performances in films like "Swades" (2004) and "Chak De! India" (2007) as being particularly deserving of the award. In "Chak De! India," he played a disgraced hockey coach seeking redemption. Although the film won the National Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, Khan was overlooked for the Best Actor award, which went to Hrithik Roshan for "Dhoom 2" that year. Similarly, his nuanced portrayal of a Muslim man with Asperger's syndrome in "My Name Is Khan" (2010) was widely lauded, earning him numerous awards, but not a National Award.

Shah Rukh Khan himself has responded to the win with humility and gratitude. In a video message, he thanked the jury, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, his directors, especially Atlee, and his fans. He acknowledged the award as a "cherished milestone" and a "responsibility to show truth on the screen," not a "finishing line". He further stated that the award is a reminder that his work matters and inspires him to keep striving and creating.

His manager, Pooja Dadlani, also shared a heartfelt message, calling the award a "deeply deserving honour". The win has been celebrated by his colleagues and the film fraternity, with many acknowledging his immense contribution to Indian cinema.

"Jawan," produced by Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment, features a star-studded cast including Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi. The film is a blend of action, romance, and social commentary, which resonated with audiences worldwide. The National Award for "Jawan" not only recognizes Khan's performance but also the film's impact on popular culture.

While the debate about whether this award was overdue continues, the overwhelming sentiment is one of joy and pride. Shah Rukh Khan's journey in Bollywood has been remarkable, and this National Award is a testament to his dedication, talent, and enduring appeal. It marks a significant moment in his career, adding another prestigious honor to his already impressive list of achievements.
