Rajesh Khanna, the first superstar of Hindi cinema, was not known to be hands-on with his finances, according to Anita Advani, who claims to have been secretly married to the actor. In a recent interview, Advani revealed that Khanna was once caught off guard by income tax issues, as he "didn't know what income tax was".
Advani explained that Khanna would simply pay whatever amount his team told him to, without scrutinizing the documents himself. "If he was asked to give one lakh, he would call his CA to ask 'how many zeros should I put'," she recounted. This lack of attention to his finances led to overdue taxes, which neither he nor his team noticed.
The situation came to a head when Khanna was suddenly asked to pay ₹45 lakh in overdue taxes. Advani stated that Khanna personally went to meet with an income tax officer, during which an argument ensued. The officer allegedly threatened to seal Khanna's house and halt the release of his film. Eventually, Khanna cleared the dues, preventing his home from being sealed.
Advani also addressed rumors that Khanna's residence was sealed and that he was forced to live in his office. She dismissed these claims as false, clarifying that "he never lived in his office" and "the house was never sealed". She explained that the income tax issue occurred in 1991.
In the same interview, Advani opened up about her relationship with Khanna, revealing that they had a private marriage. She said that they did not feel the need to publicly announce their marriage.
Khanna's personal life was often in the headlines, particularly his marriage to Dimple Kapadia at the young age of 15, and later, his relationship with Anita Advani. Although he never divorced Kapadia, he and his wife lived separately. Advani's revelations shed light on the challenges Khanna faced during the decline of his stardom and provide a glimpse into the hidden aspects of his life.
