The sudden death of industrialist Sanjay Kapur in London on June 12, 2025, has unleashed a bitter family dispute over his ₹30,000 crore estate. Kapur, the ex-husband of actress Karisma Kapoor and chairman of Sona BLW Precision Forgings (Sona Comstar), died of a heart attack while playing polo. His death has not only brought grief but also a complex legal battle involving his mother, ex-wife, children, and widow.

Rani Kapur, Sanjay's mother, has publicly claimed to be the rightful heir to the majority stake in the Sona Group. She has alleged that certain individuals are attempting to usurp the family legacy and that she was coerced into signing documents while in distress after her son's death. Rani Kapur has also claimed that her bank account has been frozen, leaving her in a difficult financial situation. Furthermore, she has described her son's death as "highly suspicious and unexplained," suggesting that the incident was being mislabeled as a cardiac arrest and that the actual facts point to something "far more troubling".

Adding another layer to the controversy, speculative reports initially suggested that Karisma Kapoor was also demanding a share in the estate. However, sources close to the family have clarified that Karisma is not involved in any property-related matters and is not seeking any share of the estate. It has been reported that Sunjay had invested Rs 14 crore in bonds for his children as part of his divorce settlement with Karisma back in 2016.
