Amidst ongoing disputes with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the makers of the highly anticipated film "Jana Nayagan," starring Vijay, are facing potential legal action from Amazon Prime Video due to delays in the film's release. The film's release, initially slated for January 9, 2026, for Pongal, has been stalled, leading to uncertainty and frustration from the streaming platform, which acquired the digital rights for a reported ₹120 crore.
The CBFC has yet to issue a censor certificate for "Jana Nayagan," causing an indefinite delay. The issues began when a member of the advisory committee, which examined the film in December 2025, filed a complaint alleging that the film hurts religious sentiments and contains an objectionable portrayal of the armed forces. The CBFC initially asked for 27 cuts. After the filmmakers submitted a revised version, the CBFC allegedly did not communicate with them between December 25 and January 5, despite repeated requests for updates.
The producers of "Jana Nayagan" have approached the Madras High Court, which is currently hearing the case. The CBFC informed the court that the initial 14 cuts were an "intermediary" decision, with the final verdict pending. The court has reserved its order on an appeal filed by the CBFC against a single judge's order directing it to issue a U/A 16+ certificate for the film. Until the court issues its order, the film's release remains on hold.
During a recent court hearing on January 20, the producers disclosed that Amazon Prime Video had warned of potential legal action on December 31 due to the uncertainty surrounding the release date. Amazon, which had reportedly planned to release the film on its platform on February 6, 2026, following a 29-day theatrical run, is reportedly unwilling to wait any longer if the film's release is further delayed.
"Jana Nayagan" is directed by H. Vinoth and is rumored to be Vijay's final film appearance. The film tells the story of Thalapathy Vetri Kondan, a former police officer and convict who raises a young girl and encourages her to join the military. The film features Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, and other notable actors.
