Director of Vijay's 'Jana Nayagan' to drop case against Censor Board at Madras High Court.

The producers of Vijay's upcoming film 'Jana Nayagan' are reportedly planning to withdraw their writ petition against the Censor Board from the Madras High Court. This decision comes as the film has been sent to the Revising Committee of the Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

The film, which stars Vijay, Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, and Mamitha Baiju, has faced delays in obtaining its censor certificate. This prompted the makers, KVN Productions, to initially approach the Madras High Court after the CBFC allegedly failed to issue a certificate in a timely manner.

On January 27, 2026, the Madras High Court set aside an earlier order from a single-judge bench that had directed the censor board to issue a certificate for 'Jana Nayagan'. The court remitted the matter for a fresh hearing, overturning the previous ruling that favored the film's producers. The dispute arose from delays in the certification process and subsequent reviews of the film, which the producers felt stalled the film's release. The court also directed the single bench to allow the censor board an opportunity to respond to the case and asked the producer to amend the writ petition.

According to sources close to India Today, the decision to send 'Jana Nayagan' to the Revising Committee is expected to lead KVN Productions to withdraw their petition from the High Court once the certificate is issued. While KVN Productions has yet to confirm this news officially, the move suggests a potential resolution to the ongoing dispute. The producers are reportedly aiming to expedite the film's release, possibly by February 20.

'Jana Nayagan,' directed by H. Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions, is a political action thriller. The film is based on the 2023 Telugu film 'Bhagavanth Kesari' and is intended to be Vijay's last film appearance before he enters politics.

The film's censorship issues have drawn criticism, with some figures like director Ranjith describing the board's actions as "extremely deplorable," suggesting a potential "political vendetta". Director Karthik Subbaraj also called for industry unity, criticizing the strict timelines imposed by the board. Congress leaders B. Manickam Tagore and Jothimani have characterized the delay as an attack on freedom of expression. Several actors, including Ravi Mohan, Silambarasan, and Jiiva, have also shown their support for the film.

On January 15, 2026, the Supreme Court of India declined to hear the producer's plea for CBFC clearance, advising them to seek relief in the Madras High Court division bench. Following this, on February 9, 2026, KVN Productions filed a plea to withdraw the writ petition against the CBFC at the Madras High Court and submitted the film to the Revising Committee for censor certification.
