A Mumbai court has issued an interim order barring YouTuber Ajey Nagar, widely known as CarryMinati, from creating or disseminating defamatory content targeting filmmaker Karan Johar. The ruling also directs social media platforms to remove existing videos containing such content.
The case stems from a defamation suit filed by Johar against Nagar and several other parties, including Nagar's manager Deepak Char, One Hand Clap Media Pvt Ltd, Poptech Growth Private Limited, and Meta Platforms Inc. Johar claimed that Nagar had uploaded videos containing defamatory statements and abusive language targeting Bollywood, nepotism, and Johar himself. The videos in question were reportedly modeled after Johar's popular talk show "Koffee With Karan," with Nagar's version titled "Coffee With Jalan".
Johar, represented by DSK Legal, argued that the videos sought to ridicule him and damage his reputation, which he had built over decades. He sought a temporary injunction to prevent Nagar and his associates from creating and uploading such videos. The legal team representing Johar, including advocates Pradeep Gandhi, Parag Khandar, Anaheeta Verma, and Pratyush Dhodda, asserted that the language used in the videos was vulgar and abusive, necessitating their immediate removal.
Judge Pandurang Bhosale of the Mumbai Civil Court, on February 9, 2026, passed an ad-interim order in favor of Johar. The court found that Johar had established a prima facie case, noting the use of "vulgar and abusive" language in the content. The judge stated that the videos needed to be taken down immediately and that an injunction should be issued against anyone circulating or re-circulating the videos on social media platforms. The court also issued John Doe orders.
Nagar's defense was that he had already deleted the videos and other related material. However, the court sided with Johar, emphasizing the need to prevent further dissemination of the defamatory content. The court has directed Meta to take down the videos and URLs.
This legal action highlights the ongoing debate surrounding nepotism in Bollywood, a topic that has often placed Karan Johar at the center of online criticism. While social media users often express their opinions through memes and roasts, this case demonstrates the potential legal ramifications of online content that crosses the line into defamation.
