Reports are circulating that Sai Pallavi is in talks to portray the legendary Carnatic vocalist M.S. Subbalakshmi in an upcoming biopic. The film is expected to delve into the life and legacy of the iconic singer, highlighting her unparalleled contributions to Indian classical music.
M.S. Subbalakshmi, who passed away in 2004 at the age of 88, was a towering figure in Indian music. She was the first musician to receive the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor. She was also the first Indian artist to perform at the United Nations General Assembly in 1966, and a recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay Award. Her renditions of classical and devotional songs reached millions and she played a significant role in popularizing Carnatic music globally. Beyond her musical achievements, Subbalakshmi also had a brief stint in cinema during the 1930s and 40s, most notably in "Meera," bridging the gap between classical music and film.
Sai Pallavi is known for her authentic performances, emotional expression, and refusal to conform to industry stereotypes, making her a potentially ideal choice to portray the multifaceted persona of M.S. Subbalakshmi. She is currently filming for "Ramayana" alongside Ranbir Kapoor.
Gowtam Tinnanuri, known for directing films like "Malli Raava" and the National Award-winning "Jersey," is reportedly being considered to direct the biopic. Geetha Arts, a production house known for films like "Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo" and "Magadheera," is expected to produce the film. Geetha Arts and Sai Pallavi previously collaborated on "Thandel".
The project is reportedly in its early stages, and neither Geetha Arts nor Sai Pallavi have officially confirmed the project. However, industry sources suggest that preparations are underway to highlight M.S. Subbalakshmi's influential role in classical music and Indian cinema. Given the director and production house involved, Sai Pallavi is likely to sign the film, pending her readiness to take on the responsibility of portraying such a legendary figure.
