Advertising Icon Piyush Pandey Dies at 70: Celebrities Remember a Creative Genius and Industry Titan

The advertising world is mourning the loss of Piyush Pandey, the creative genius behind some of India's most iconic and memorable advertising campaigns, who passed away on Friday, October 24, 2025, in Mumbai at the age of 70. Pandey's death was due to complications from pneumonia, as confirmed by his sister, Ila Arun. His funeral was held on Saturday at the Shivaji Park crematorium in Dadar.

Pandey, who served as the Executive Chairman and Chief Creative Officer Worldwide at Ogilvy India, leaves behind a legacy that has transformed the landscape of Indian advertising. He was known for his ability to connect with the masses by incorporating Indian sensibilities, humor, and heart into his work. His campaigns for brands like Fevicol, Cadbury, and Asian Paints became cultural landmarks, resonating with people on an emotional level.

Tributes have poured in from across various sectors, with Bollywood stars, filmmakers, and fellow creatives honoring Pandey's immense contribution to the industry. Shah Rukh Khan, who had the opportunity to work with Pandey, expressed his grief on social media, "Working and being around Piyush Pandey always felt effortless and fun. Was an honour being part of the pure magic he created. He carried his genius so lightly and revolutionised the ad industry in India. Rest in Peace my friend. Will miss you lots".

Amitabh Bachchan also shared a heartfelt tribute, calling Pandey "a creative genius, a most amiable friend, and guide". Bachchan highlighted their long and memorable professional association, during which they created some of India's most iconic advertising campaigns, including the Cadbury Dairy Milk's "Pappu Pass Ho Gaya" series and the Polio Eradication campaign. Big B, along with his son Abhishek Bachchan, attended the last rites to pay their respects.

Anupam Kher reminisced about Pandey's charisma and vibrant spirit, stating that his ad slogans had become integral to people's lives. Filmmaker Hansal Mehta also paid tribute, saying, "Fevicol ka jod toot gaya. Aaj ad world ne apna glue kho diya. Piyush Pandey, aap acche se jao". Union Minister Piyush Goyal expressed his sadness, acknowledging Pandey's monumental contribution to the world of advertising and communications.

Ogilvy India, in a statement, mourned the loss of Pandey, stating, "He wasn't just the heart and voice of Ogilvy for over 40 years, but also a creative force who redefined the very identity of Indian advertising. Bringing in worldwide recognition and love to work rooted in our culture. His iconic work and unforgettable lessons have left an everlasting impact on each and every one of us at Ogilvy".

Pandey's journey in advertising began in 1982 when he joined Ogilvy & Mather India. He started as a trainee account executive before transitioning to the creative side, where he revolutionized Indian advertising with his storytelling and emotion-driven campaigns. His ability to blend storytelling with emotion helped redefine how Indian audiences connected with brands.

Piyush Pandey's legacy extends beyond his iconic campaigns. He was the first jury President from Asia for the Cannes Lions Festival. His contributions to advertising were recognized with numerous accolades, including the Padma Shri in 2016.

The advertising industry and the nation mourn the loss of a true visionary, whose creativity, leadership, and laughter will be deeply missed.
