Hansal Mehta Echoes Deepika Padukone's Concerns, Criticizing Exhausting 12-Hour Work Shifts in the Industry.

Following Deepika Padukone's recent comments regarding the disparity in working hours between male and female actors in Bollywood and the demand for reasonable work conditions, filmmaker Hansal Mehta has voiced his support, reigniting the conversation about the grueling schedules prevalent in the Indian entertainment industry.

Padukone, who recently exited two major film projects, Spirit and the Kalki 2898 AD sequel, reportedly due to her request for a fixed eight-hour workday, has openly criticized the industry's "disorganized" nature. She highlighted the double standards, noting that many male superstars have been working eight-hour days for years without facing any backlash. Padukone stated, "By virtue of being a woman, if that's coming across as being pushy or whatever, then so be it. But it is no secret that a lot of superstars, male superstars, in the Indian film industry, have been working for eight hours for years, and it's never made headlines". She further added, "Even though we call it an industry, we have never really worked like one. It's a very disorganised industry, and I think it's time we brought in some system into this culture".

Mehta, known for directing Scam 1992, took to social media to express his views on the matter, stating, "In our line of work, a 12-hour day is politely called a 'shift'". He further elaborated on the demanding nature of the profession, pointing out the impact on mental and physical well-being. "The truth is, between the chaos of shoots, the endless commute, hurried meals and barely a few hours of broken sleep, there's little left of us," Mehta wrote. He questioned the sustainability of an industry that "runs on the relentless draining of its people," particularly emphasizing the plight of daily wage workers who are often the most affected by the long and arduous hours.

Mehta's comments resonate with a growing sentiment within the industry, with many artists and technicians advocating for better work-life balance and more humane working conditions. The debate extends beyond the film industry, with discussions around work hours and productivity also occurring in other sectors.

However, opinions within the film industry remain divided. Some filmmakers argue that the creative process requires flexibility and that strict adherence to fixed hours may not always be feasible. Others emphasize the need for professionalism and pre-planned schedules to ensure efficient production while respecting the time and well-being of everyone involved. Director Tarun Mansukhani stated he had no problem with new mothers in Bollywood wanting to do an eight-hour shift, but the demand has to come with prior information.

The conversation around working hours also brings to light the larger issue of industry structure and the need for systemic changes. Padukone, in her statement, pointed out the disorganized nature of Bollywood and the absence of standard industry practices. This has led to calls for greater regulation and a more structured approach to filmmaking, ensuring fair treatment and reasonable working conditions for all.

The debate surrounding Deepika Padukone's stance and Hansal Mehta's support highlights the need for a more comprehensive dialogue within the Indian entertainment industry. The discussion encompasses not only working hours but also issues of gender equality, worker welfare, and the overall organization of the industry. As the conversation continues, it remains to be seen whether these discussions will translate into tangible changes that promote a healthier and more sustainable work environment for everyone involved.
