Selena Gomez Reflects on Maternal Role and Future Aspirations: "I Hope to Experience That One Day"

Selena Gomez recently shared a heartfelt sentiment about motherhood while celebrating her return to the Wizards of Waverly Place universe. The 33-year-old actress and singer posted on her Instagram Story after the release of the second season finale of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, a sequel series to the original Disney Channel hit. In the finale, it's revealed that her character, Alex Russo, is now a mother.

Gomez re-shared an emotional clip featuring her and Janice LeAnn Brown, who plays her on-screen daughter, Billie Russo. Alongside the clip, Gomez wrote, "Alex Russo is a mommy...hopefully one day that'll be me," adding a teary-eyed emoji.

In a subsequent Instagram Story, Gomez reposted a clip of her hugging Brown, saying, "We are mother and daughter. I really am grateful for this lovely Janice child". Brown, 15, echoed the sentiment, recalling the emotional connection they shared, especially after the table read. "It was very emotional, especially for me and her after the table read," Brown said in an interview. Gomez added, "We were just puddles".

Gomez's journey hasn't been without its challenges. In a 2024 interview with Vanity Fair, she revealed that due to medical reasons, she is unable to carry her own children. "I haven't ever said this, but I unfortunately can't carry my own children," Gomez shared. "I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby's in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while".

Despite this, Gomez remains optimistic about her path to motherhood, considering options like adoption and surrogacy. "I'm in a much better place with that," she explained. "I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me. It made me really thankful for the other outlets for people who are dying to be moms. I'm one of those people. I'm excited for what that journey will look like, but it'll look a little different. At the end of the day, I don't care. It'll be mine. It'll be my baby".

Gomez, who recently married music producer Benny Blanco on September 27, 2025, has previously expressed her excitement about starting a family. In a March episode of the Jay Shetty Podcast, Gomez and Blanco shared their anticipation for the future. "I don't know what will happen, obviously, but I love children," Gomez said. "I love making [children] laugh; they're just so sweet. So absolutely, when that day comes, I'm so excited for it". Blanco added that Gomez naturally connects with children, spending hours talking and playing with them.

Beyond her personal life, Gomez continues to thrive professionally. Her new movie, Emilia Pérez, where she plays Jessi Del Monte, the wife of a cartel leader, is now available on Netflix. The film has garnered attention for its unique blend of genres and Gomez's performance.
