The children of actress Karisma Kapoor, Samaira and Kiaan, are contesting the will of their late father, businessman Sunjay Kapur, in the Delhi High Court, alleging forgery and a criminal conspiracy to disinherit them. The dispute centers around Sunjay Kapur's ₹3,000-crore estate and a will dated March 21, 2025, which leaves his entire personal estate to his widow, Priya Sachdev Kapur.
Sunjay Kapur, the former chairman of Sona Comstar, passed away in June 2025 from a heart attack while in the UK. His death has triggered a high-profile inheritance battle between his children, his widow Priya Sachdev Kapur, and other family members. Samaira and Kiaan, through their legal representation, claim that the will is "forged, fabricated, and surrounded by suspicious circumstances". They are seeking their rightful share as Class-1 heirs.
Senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, representing Karisma Kapoor's children, argued in the Delhi High Court that the purported will is "bogus" and a "digital footprint of criminal conspiracy". He pointed out several inconsistencies and errors in the will, including the misspelling of Sunjay Kapur's son's name and an incorrect address for his daughter. Jethmalani stated that the will was first drafted in an MS Word file on February 10, with the last modification made on March 7 and stored on the device of Nitin Sharma, an aide of Priya Kapur. He argued that it defies logic that Sunjay Kapur would be modifying a will stored on Sharma's device while on holiday with his son.
The children also find it suspicious that Sunjay Kapur, a well-educated man, would not inform the executor of the will that she had been appointed. They further allege that the will does not give details of various assets, including jewellery and crypto assets. Jethmalani argued that Sunjay Kapur had no involvement in drafting or changing the will and that the document was allegedly altered on March 17, 2025, when Sunjay was away on holiday. He also questioned why the will makes no provision for Sunjay's mother, Rani Kapur, potentially leaving her penniless.
The lawyer for the children also accused Priya Kapur of being in a "tearing hurry" to appropriate the assets and restrict the children's share, likening her to "Cinderella's stepmother". He claimed that Priya became a managing director a day after the funeral and that Nitin Sharma was rewarded for attesting as a witness on the alleged forged will by being made a director of Aureus Investments Private Ltd.
The High Court had previously allowed Priya Kapur to file a list of the late businessman's assets in a sealed cover. However, Justice Jyoti Singh observed that the document was not attested, signed, or indexed and directed Priya Kapur to comply with the norms. The court has ordered Priya to disclose all of Sunjay's assets. The children have also alleged that Priya Sachdeva withheld critical information and details about Sunjay Kapur's will and accused her of concealing details and later presenting the contested will. They claim their father had repeatedly assured them of their share, which was not reflected in the final will.
Priya Kapur's lawyers have argued that there is enough evidence to show the will in question was created and executed before her husband's death and have disclosed that assets worth around ₹1,900 crore have already been transferred to the plaintiff siblings. The legal battle is ongoing, with the Delhi High Court hearing arguments and examining evidence to determine the validity of the will and the rightful heirs to Sunjay Kapur's estate.
