Hailey Bieber has once again addressed the persistent comparisons to Selena Gomez, expressing her frustration with being constantly "pitted against other people". In a recent interview with WSJ. Magazine, the model and entrepreneur opened up about the tiring nature of the comparisons, particularly since she "didn't ask for that".
The comparisons between Bieber and Gomez have persisted for years, fueled by the history of Justin Bieber's relationships with both women. Despite both Hailey and Selena having moved on, and even publicly dispelling rumors of a feud, the internet continues to perpetuate a rivalry, especially concerning their beauty brands, Rhode and Rare Beauty, which are now both available at Sephora.
Hailey Bieber stated, "It's always annoying being pitted against other people. I didn't ask for that. When people want to see you a certain way and they've made up a story about you in their minds, it's not up to you to change that". She has, in the past, described the comparisons as "vile" and "disgusting," also noting that they stem from "twisted and perpetuated narratives". She previously expressed her distaste for the idea of two women being pitted against each other because of a man.
Despite the ongoing comparisons, Hailey Bieber maintains that she is not competitive with other beauty brands and believes that "there's space for everybody". She added that she is "most competitive with myself" and doesn't "feel competitive with people that I'm not inspired by".
Notably, when the WSJ Magazine reporter attempted to directly inquire about Gomez and Rare Beauty, Hailey's publicist intervened. However, Hailey proceeded to express her general feelings about being compared to others.
Hailey Bieber is currently experiencing significant success with her skincare line, Rhode, including a $1 billion acquisition by e.l.f. Beauty and its launch in Sephora. Despite these achievements, she says the negative comments about her marriage to Justin Bieber and comparisons to other celebrities have not ceased.
Selena Gomez recently married Benny Blanco, and some fans thought she copied Hailey and Justin's 2018 wedding. Hailey is thriving with her skincare brand, husband Justin, and their baby Jack Blue. Recently, Selena showed support for Hailey online.
In June 2023, Hailey addressed the comparisons more explicitly, stating, "I don't think that this is about me, Hailey Bieber, and Selena Gomez—this is not about this pitting between two women and division between two women...It's about the vile, disgusting hatred that can come from completely made-up and twisted and perpetuated narratives. That can be really dangerous". She reiterated her disgust that she and Gomez were being compared solely because of their connection to Justin Bieber.
