Jim Carrey eyed for George Jetson in Warner Bros. live-action reboot: Details and possibilities explored.

Warner Bros. is reportedly developing a live-action movie adaptation of the classic Hanna-Barbera animated series, The Jetsons, and is in talks with Jim Carrey to star. Colin Trevorrow, known for his work on the Jurassic World franchise, is in negotiations to direct and co-write the screenplay with Joe Epstein.

The Jetsons originally aired on ABC in 1962 and ran for three seasons. The series, a sci-fi counterpart to The Flintstones, followed the Jetson family – George, Jane, Judy, and Elroy – as they navigated life in Orbit City with flying cars, robot maids, and other futuristic conveniences.

If the deal closes, Carrey is expected to play George Jetson, the well-meaning but often harried patriarch of the family. Known for his energetic comedic style, Carrey appears a good fit to bring the iconic cartoon dad to life.

Trevorrow and Epstein's screenplay aims to blend retro sci-fi humor with contemporary themes, exploring technology, work, and family dynamics in a rapidly evolving world. The film intends to capture the spirit of wonder that defined the original series while examining how the futuristic dreams of the past resonate in today's world, shaped by AI, automation, and corporate influences.

The project marks a potential return to big-screen comedy for Carrey, who has been largely absent from live-action roles since Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in 2020. He is also expected to reprise his role as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, slated for release in March 2027.

Warner Bros. has been trying to bring The Jetsons to the big screen for many years. Previous attempts included a 2003 version with Adam Shankman and a 2007 CGI version by Robert Rodriguez. In 2017, ABC ordered a pilot for a live-action series from Robert Zemeckis, but it was not picked up. The last time the cartoon graced the screen was in 1990 with Jetsons: The Movie, an animated feature film.

While Warner Bros. has not yet issued an official statement, sources indicate that the studio plans to begin pre-production in early 2026. Casting for other roles, including Jane, Judy, Elroy, and Rosie the Robot, is expected to follow Carrey's deal.

If greenlit, The Jetsons will join a growing list of Hanna-Barbera reboots in development, alongside projects inspired by The Flintstones and Wacky Races.
