The family of the late businessman Sunjay Kapur is currently embroiled in a complex legal battle over his estimated Rs 30,000 crore estate. The dispute primarily involves Sunjay's children from his marriage to actress Karisma Kapoor, Samaira and Kiaan, and his third wife, Priya Sachdev Kapur. Sunjay Kapur passed away on June 12, 2025, in London, reportedly due to a heart attack after a polo match.
Recently, the Delhi High Court has been hearing the case, which has seen dramatic turns, including accusations of forgery and manipulation of Sunjay Kapur's will. Samaira and Kiaan are challenging the authenticity of the will, claiming that their stepmother, Priya Sachdev, influenced the document to secure a larger share of the inheritance.
According to the children's lawyer, Mahesh Jethmalani, Priya Sachdev controls a significant portion of the estate: 60% directly, 12% through her son, and 75% of the Kapur family trust. Jethmalani has described Priya as an "acute gambler" and compared her to "Cinderella's stepmother," suggesting she is attempting to rob the children of their rightful inheritance. He also pointed out "serious infirmities" in the will, such as incorrect spellings and addresses, arguing that Sunjay Kapur, known for his education and reputation, would not have made such mistakes. The lawyer further claimed that metadata indicates the will was created and altered on a stranger's computer.
Priya Sachdev's legal team has refuted these allegations, with her lawyer branding the case as a product of "greedy" intentions. Priya had sought permission from the court to disclose the details of her late husband's assets in a sealed cover, citing sensitive financial information, a request that was initially questioned by the Delhi High Court.
Adding another layer to the situation, Sunjay Kapur's mother, Rani Kapur, is also involved in the dispute. She claims her rights in the family trust were ignored after Priya's marriage to Sunjay and has expressed concerns about asset sales occurring without her knowledge. The children have also questioned the exclusion of their grandmother as a beneficiary in the will.
Despite the ongoing legal turmoil, Karisma Kapoor and Priya Sachdev were seen together at a prayer meeting held in Delhi for Sunjay Kapur. Karisma attended with her children, Samaira and Kiaan, offering their respects. This rare moment of unity saw Karisma and Priya offering prayers together, signifying a mutual intention to come together despite the circumstances. Sunjay's sister, Mandhira Kapur, has acknowledged that Karisma remains in close contact with the family and is supportive of her children's relationship with them.
On Sunjay Kapur's birthday, Priya Sachdev posted a video tribute on Instagram featuring unseen family moments, including appearances by Karisma Kapoor's children. The post, made amid the legal battle, included a montage of family celebrations, vacations, and everyday life.
The legal battle continues in the Delhi High Court, with the next hearing scheduled for Tuesday. The case highlights the complexities and emotional challenges that can arise when family dynamics and inheritance are intertwined.
