Indian Film 'Dupki' Beijing Premiere Halted: Visa Denials Mar Festival, Official Expresses Disappointment.

The Indian comedy film Dupki, which tells the story of three children from different backgrounds and their dreams, premiered at the 6th Beijing International Children's Festival on Saturday, October 18, 2025. However, the director and cast were not present for the screening because they were denied visas. The four-day festival began on October 16 and featured 62 films.

Gavin Lee, an official at the festival, expressed his regret that the filmmakers were unable to obtain visas. Abhay Punjabi, the director of Dupki, stated that the Chinese Embassy in Delhi rejected his visa application, despite submitting it with an official invitation letter from the festival organizers. According to Punjabi, the embassy did not provide a reason for the rejection and no one from the Dupki team was able to attend the festival.

Punjabi is associated with the Film and Television Institute in Pune. Dupki is his first independent film after working on projects such as a series on Mahatma Gandhi. The Hindi-language comedy is slated for release in India.

Dupki follows the adventures of three children in Delhi from different religious and economic backgrounds during a chaotic summer. One of the children dreams of having a swimming pool in his slum, another wants to study at an Ivy League school before puberty, and a Muslim girl who loves cricket wants to bowl yorkers while wearing a hijab. The film was produced by Amit Garg, an industrialist, and his wife Ritu Garg from Karnal, with a budget of approximately Rs 2.5 crore. The cast includes Sheeba Chadha, Raj Kumar, Zoie Aggarwal Ahmed, Saksham Dhawan, and Charu Shankar.
