Silsila's filming: The on-screen drama that mirrored Rekha and Jaya Bachchan's real-life tensions.

The 1981 film Silsila, directed by Yash Chopra, remains a topic of discussion in Bollywood due to its casting choices and its reflection of real-life events. The film starred Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, and Rekha, at a time when rumors of an off-screen relationship between Amitabh and Rekha were widespread.

The casting of Silsila was a bold move by Yash Chopra, given the rumored dynamics between the lead actors. The film's narrative involves a love triangle, mirroring the alleged real-life situation. Amitabh Bachchan plays Amit, who is caught between his wife, Shobha (Jaya Bachchan), and his former lover, Chandni (Rekha).

According to a recent interview with author Hanif Zaveri, Sanjeev Kumar played a crucial role in convincing Jaya Bachchan to accept the role in Silsila. Chopra approached Kumar, who shared a close bond with Jaya, to persuade her. Jaya agreed, but she had one condition. She insisted on being present on set at all times, even when she wasn't required for a scene. This condition was seemingly motivated by Rekha's presence in the film.

Initially, Smita Patil and Parveen Babi were considered for roles in Silsila. However, Parveen Babi's ill health led to Rekha's casting, prompting Chopra to believe that Jaya Bachchan should play the role of the wife.

Yash Chopra himself acknowledged the tension and challenges of directing Silsila with its complex casting. He admitted to being anxious, as the real-life dynamics of the actors mirrored the on-screen drama. He confessed that he was always on edge because it was real life coming into reel life.

Despite the initial challenges, Chopra wanted Rekha for the role of the other woman and Jaya to play the wife. According to NDTV, Chopra promised Bachchan a memorable film if he got the leading ladies of his life to play the leading ladies in this story.

Hanif Zaveri revealed that Jaya Bachchan never wanted to work in Silsila and disliked Rekha. Before the rumors of the Amitabh-Rekha-Jaya saga, Jaya and Rekha were warm friends.

Silsila initially flopped but has since gained cult status. The film is remembered for its music, romantic imagery, and narrative ambition.
