Amar Kaushik has shared a major update on his upcoming mythological film Mahavatar, starring Vicky Kaushal, revealing the project's scale and the meticulous preparation involved. The film, based on the life of Lord Parshuram, was initially slated for a December 2026 release but has now been postponed to allow the team more time to perfect it.
Kaushik described Mahavatar as a "huge passion project" rooted in his childhood fascination with Parshuram. Growing up in Arunachal Pradesh, he was intrigued by the tales of the fierce warrior, one of the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu. "When I was in school in Arunachal Pradesh, there used to be a Parshuram Kund close by," Kaushik shared. "I used to ask my mother who Parshuram was, but I was told not to talk much about it. I was only told that he was quite hot-tempered. Hence, I was quite fascinated by the character".
The director acknowledged the significant responsibility that comes with bringing such a revered figure to life on screen. "Mujhe toh soch ke hi darr lag raha hai (Just thinking about it scares me)," he confessed, emphasizing the weight of expectations and the desire to do justice to the epic story.
According to Kaushik, the Mahavatar team has been diligently working on the film's pre-production for the past six to seven months. This includes extensive work on set design, weapon design, and the overall look of each character. "We have worked on the set design, weapon design, how every character would look, etc," Kaushik explained. "The scripting is done. Yet, we need more time". The film's postponement was revealed during the Diwali premiere of Thamma, with the announcement that Shakti Shalini would now take its original December 24, 2026, release date.
Amar believes that Vicky Kaushal is perfectly suited for the role. Kaushik also expressed excitement about using his understanding and experience of VFX to create a visually grand and immersive cinematic experience. "Now, I have reached a stage where I have an understanding and experience of using VFX. That gave me the confidence to pull it off," he said.
Filming is now expected to commence in mid-2026, after Vicky Kaushal completes his other commitments. "Vicky will finish his other commitments, and after that, he'll also start his preparation," Kaushik stated.
While a new release date for Mahavatar has not yet been announced, the director's commitment to meticulous preparation and his passion for the subject matter suggest that the film will be worth the wait. Kaushik's statement makes it clear that Mahavatar is shaping up to be an ambitious and visually grand project. While fans may have to wait longer to witness Vicky Kaushal in this mythological avatar, it seems the extra time will only ensure a larger-than-life cinematic experience worthy of the legend of Parshuram.
