In an exclusive interview, acclaimed writer and creator Harlan Coben, known for his work in the mystery-suspense-thriller genre, revealed his desire to set a TV show in India. Coben, whose books like "Tell No One," "No Second Chance," and "Just One Look" have been adapted into TV series, spoke about his latest show "Lazarus" and his deep affection for India.
Coben emphasized the importance of separating his novel writing from his TV writing. He believes that thinking about adapting a novel while writing it is "the kiss of death". When writing "Lazarus," Coben focused solely on its potential for the screen, without considering its suitability as a book. Conversely, when writing novels, he concentrates on their quality on the page.
"I actually plan on setting one of my works here," Coben shared, expressing his fascination with India and its rich history. He is actively working with a team to set one of his books or TV series in India and hopes to realize this vision soon. Coben has visited India and appreciates its diversity. He understands that India is a vast country with different languages and cultures.
Coben's works often involve transplanting American stories to different countries, which creates an interesting dynamic. While his novels are typically set in America, many of the adaptations take place in other countries like the United Kingdom, Poland, Spain, and France.
Coben signed a five-year contract with Netflix in 2018, which was extended for another four years in 2023, to adapt 14 of his novels into series and films. Netflix has already adapted seven of his thriller novels into series. One of his novels, "Shelter," was adapted by Amazon. In 2025, Netflix is set to premiere "Missing You," marking the tenth Harlan Coben show. Coben is also venturing into unscripted TV with a true crime series for CBS titled "Harlan Coben's Final Twist," set to debut in the network's 2025-2026 season.
"Lazarus," Coben's original screenplay, is a fast-paced and twisty thriller about a father-son duo of psychiatrists. Coben's series are known for their implausible plots and numerous twists.
