Mouni Roy's Mumbai Restaurant Badmaash: Affordable Bhel and Roti, a Belief in Value.

Mouni Roy's restaurant, Badmaash, has been the subject of recent discussions regarding the pricing of certain menu items, specifically the Rs 395 Avocado Bhel and Rs 105 Tandoori Roti. This has sparked varied reactions from patrons and observers alike.

Located in Mumbai's Andheri, Badmaash aims to offer a unique dining experience with its "progressive Indian cuisine" and a jungle-themed décor featuring lush greenery. The restaurant also has branches in other cities like Bengaluru and Kolkata. Mouni Roy co-owns the Mumbai location. The restaurant's interior incorporates ochre yellow and shades of green to create a vibrant and fun atmosphere.

The menu features a range of vegetarian and non-vegetarian Indian dishes, with prices typically ranging from Rs 300 to Rs 800. Some of the notable items include Masala Peanut, Masala Papad, Crispy Corn, and Sev Puri (Rs 295 each), Kanda Bhajiya (Rs 355), and prawn-based dishes priced around Rs 795. The bread selection includes Tandoori Roti (Rs 105), Naan (Rs 115), and Amritsari Kulcha (Rs 145). Desserts such as Shahi Tukda and Gulab Jamun are priced at Rs 410 each.

Badmaash also offers Jain-friendly options like Tomato Tulsi Shorba and Palak Nariyal Ka Shorba, both priced at Rs 315. A creative twist on a classic Indian snack, the Avocado Bhel, is priced at Rs 395. Mouni Roy explained that the inspiration behind this dish came from her love for both avocado and jhalmuri. The restaurant also features a signature drink called Mounilicious (Rs 695), a mix of gin, cucumber, kiwi, lemon, elderflower, and sparkling water.

Mouni Roy has expressed her passion for Indian cuisine and her belief that there aren't enough good Indian restaurants, especially in Bengaluru and Mumbai. She sees Badmaash as an opportunity to fill that gap.

In a conversation with Zero1 Clips by Zerodha, Mouni Roy shared insights into her income sources and how she reinvests earnings from her restaurants to fuel further growth. “I get about 40% of my income from social media. Movies pay me about 20%. Whatever I earn from my other businesses, like restaurants, we put back into them so we can grow manifold in five years," she said.

Badmaash aims to provide an exceptional eating experience by offering Indian street food with a twist. Some of these innovative dishes include Parsley and Kaafir Lime Kanda Bhajiya, Togarashi and Jalapeño Sabudana Vada, and Bird's Eye Chill and Crispy Avocado Bhel. The restaurant also boasts imaginative cocktails like 'Pushpa 3 The Cocktail', 'Sharmile Nakhare', 'Genda Phool', 'Rolex Ka Maal', and the signature 'Mounilicious'. Mouni's personal favorite is the Stir-fried Mushroom Milagu with Shimeji Crisps.

Mouni Roy ventured into the restaurant business in 2023, launching Badmaash in Bengaluru's Sarjapur area and Mumbai's Andheri. Currently, she owns over six restaurants across India.
