Chennai, India – Veteran Bollywood actress Vidya Balan is poised to make her full-fledged Tamil cinema debut in "Jailer 2," sharing screen space with superstar Rajinikanth. This marks a significant moment for Balan, who had a brief appearance in the 2019 Tamil film "Nerkonda Paarvai".
"Jailer 2," directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, is a sequel to the 2023 hit "Jailer". The film has already completed more than half of its shooting schedule and is aiming for an August 2026 release.
Sources close to the production have revealed that Vidya Balan will play a pivotal role as the eldest daughter of Mithun Chakraborty’s character, who is the main antagonist. Chakraborty and Rajinikanth will be seen together on screen. This casting decision is a welcome move, potentially offering a refreshing take on age representation in cinema.
Currently, the film is being shot in Chennai and is expected to move into post-production in January. Following the Chennai schedule, the team will reportedly move to Goa for the remaining two months of shooting, starting in late October.
"Jailer 2" is expected to be a direct continuation of the first film, following Tiger Muthuvel Pandian as he confronts a new idol-smuggling syndicate. The film will also delve into the protagonist's family dynamics after his son's death.
While Vidya Balan and her team have remained tight-lipped about the project, a representative from the film stated that it is too early to comment.
Vidya Balan was last seen in the 2024 film "Bhool Bhulaiyaa," where she reprised her roles as Mallika and Manjulika. In a recent interview, she shared her optimistic outlook and self-belief, stating, "I actually believe there is nothing wrong with me. And I think that is a great attitude because it helped me sail through".
"Jailer 2" is produced by Kalanithi Maran under Sun Pictures. The film also stars Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, and Mirnaa, who will be reprising their roles from the first film. S. J. Suryah is also joining the cast. Shiva Rajkumar and Nandamuri Balakrishna will be making cameo appearances.
