Sweta Keswani Accuses Priyanka Chopra of Self-Promotion Over Supporting South Asian Community Advancement.

Sweta Keswani, an actress who has been working in the United States for over a decade, recently shared her views on Priyanka Chopra's impact on South Asian representation in Hollywood. In an exclusive interview with India Today, Keswani stated that while Chopra has achieved significant individual success, she isn't actively contributing to uplifting other South Asians in the industry.

Keswani drew a comparison between Chopra and Mindy Kaling, highlighting Kaling's efforts in writing, producing, and actively creating opportunities for other South Asian actors and filmmakers. "I think it's incredible what she's (Priyanka) accomplished, there's no two ways about that. But she's not Mindy Kaling. She's not helping other South Asians. She's only helping herself to be very honest," Keswani said. She emphasized that Kaling is "actually writing, producing and helping other South Asians to break through in the business, which is so hard as it is for women of colour".

Keswani also reflected on the social dynamics within the South Asian entertainment community in the West. She described the presence of cliques and how her responsibilities as a mother and living outside of the city initially kept her separate from these social circles. "I feel that there are cliques just like everywhere. So certain people like certain people, will call certain people, and they'll be cliques. Unfortunately, I'm not in any South Asian cliques," Keswani explained. She also shared a sentiment she had heard: "South Asians are the biggest racists...they hate other South Asians" and described the social climbing that she witnessed in the filmmaking business.

Keswani expressed her commitment to amplifying marginalized voices through her own projects. She is currently working on a film titled Tabassum, written by a South Asian writer, in which she stars and also serves as a producer. Keswani highlighted the importance of contributing to the community, stating, "My co-producer, who's a dear friend and an indigenous woman, loved my story and is helping amplify my voice through this film".

Priyanka Chopra's journey in Hollywood began with the thriller series Quantico (2015-2018), followed by roles in movies such as Baywatch (2017), The White Tiger (2021), and The Matrix Resurrections (2021). Mindy Kaling has been noted for creating opportunities for South Asians.

Keswani, who moved to the USA in 2010, will soon appear in an episode of Law & Order SVU. She spoke about her role in the show and bonding with Mariska Hargitay.

This isn't the first time Keswani has been linked to Chopra in the media. In 2020, Keswani shared a throwback picture from an interview she conducted with Chopra in 2005, addressing the frequent comparisons between them. She humorously noted that the main thing they had in common was "American husbands".
